Dodger, this is very true - the best insurance company is the one that pays out without too much hassle when you have a claim. Until you have a claim you don't know! Has anyone had any experience of claiming on their insurance? that may be a better guide.

Edited to say just renewing mine with N&G.

Another N&G customer here, provided via Alan Boswell in Norwich, not the cheapest but they understand the Norfolk Broads properly and I found them to be very efficient in my dealings with them. N&G also provide 3mil public liability which exceeds the requirements.
My parents have been with SAGA and have been pleased with them as well.

Having not had to use the claims Department at N&G thank goodness, my decision to go with them was not based purely on cost. It was based on experience of others on another forum who have had the need to claim who reported they were fully covered for the repairs on every occasion.
l have had first hand experience of Zurich with car insurance and there I was dealt with efficiently and was more than satisfied with the result of an own fault write off !
The only drawback has been I have been plagued with companies saying I am due compensation for non existent injuries sustained !! (I believe this can happen no matter who you are with  Question)

Thanks everyone, some really good advice on here. Like anything, it always pays to ask and I'll probably check out both companies mentioned. For the first year, keeping costs down would be favourable.
Have you found that contacting them directly is the best way to get a good price or using a comparison site? Like the one mentioned earlier, 'boatcompare' or something?

Dave

A lot seems to depend on your boat age type and usage, We have been with Euromarine for some years. For our Seamaster 30 they did not require a survey only a copy of the BSS certificate. Cost including Legal protection and personal effects for inland waterway and tidal access was £152 (including a £42 no claims discount). Thankfully I have not had to claim but a friend has and he was happy with the claim was handled. Have a look at their website.

I enquired direct here

https://www.navandgen.zurich.co.uk

Under 25 ft use small craft, no survey required which can cost several hundreds

Lovely.

I've sent a few inquiries to those recommended for Insurance quotes. I've also been told to go with IRCM... anyone have any dealings with them?

At the risk of opening a can of worms, I am with Edward Williams and have been since 2002...

I don't understand why anyone would:

a) take out boat insurance with a company that is not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (or EU equivalent) (click this linky thingy to view their warning about Edward Williams);

b) take out insurance with a company whose product does not comply with the Broads Authority requirement that insurance must be issued by a provider so regulated as above. Click  here to see a copy of the requirement;

c) make a false declaration to the Broads Authority.

ElysianCraft,

I would read Paladines reply very carefully.

The Broads Authority solicitor is in contact with the FCA regarding this matter. The last I heard is that the matter is now being passed upwards within the authority. I'm hoping that they will finally give boaters some proper guidance on the matter, preferably before the next round of insurance declarations at the next annual toll renewal.

In the meantime the authority have made it clear that the onus is on the toll payer to make sure their insurance complies with the requirements of the Broads Act 2009.

Any insurance company that appears on the FCA and Spanish DGS lists of not authorised insurers plainly does not meet the requirements of the Act as per the declaration that you need to make. I really cannot for the life of me see why anyone would either use such an insurance company, admit to using such an insurance company, or recommend such a company.

Hopefully in due course there will be a statement from the BA and this can of worms will be closed.

Just because The BA make a request, don't automatically assume they have the powers to make such requests!! Keeping a careful eye on an Authority which is making it's own rules.
