I had mine done at Maycraft. (not much use if you are on the Thames I know). They did a good job and it was cheap. However, they are slow. Some say this is just Norfolk speed. I suspect that Paul will be the expert on this subject. Nigel Ludham

One can fall a long way from the description of 'expert' !! I can certainly share my own DIY experiences, (good and bad !) There are dire warnings about 'dry sanding' existing anti-foulings, needless to say, it's produces a very harmfull dust. We have a mixture of salt and fresh on the Broads, so it's best to use a paint specifically produced for the area, e.g. 'Blakes Broads'. I used two coats of 'Compass' hard antifoul on my small Shetland (which may get the odd sea use), which is still looking very good and clear after a season on Hickling. On my ex-hire Hampton Safari (in the photo behind my waving sponge), I carried on with the orginal scheme of 'Blakes Broads' around the waterline and 'Tar Varnish' under the main part of the bottom. This is apparently a very common finish for hire boats, both wooden and glassfibre (I'ts very cheap... I'm not sure about it's effectiveness though.) After two summers, the tarred area had a thick covering of freshwater mussels (spelt it right this time), whereas the antifouled areas were quite clear still. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has found this to be a problem...

Hi I used FLAG anti fouling from screwfix for £39.99 a tin two years ago, the boat is out of the water at the moment waiting for me to give it another go, on looking at the condition of the paint at the moment it is perfectly fine & would have probably done another year!! where the boat was resting on supports before and no paint was applied I had to remove a 12 inch square of weed about 6 inches long! this proved to me how good the brand of paint was so I am using it again Cheers Phil

I paid £150 to have mine done. It was 20ft long. Harry May certainly does do big boats. He used to do his hire fleet (now for sale at the Woods Yard brokers). If you are not in any hurry, why not call him and ask? 01692 670241. I have never had a problem with the workmanship at Maycraft. Sticking to time is another matter. Nigel Ludham
