Hi We are fitting a FM radio and need to install a Ariel. Has anyone fitted a aerial within the boat so it's hidden ? I'm thinking of fitting it within the fibreglass helm on the top deck. Would the fibreglass stop the Arial from picking up a signal ? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Rob

Never had a problem with them, on my present Hampton 25 I have a normal stubby car Aerial fitted in the cupboard at the bow of the boat, on others I've used the same aerial fitted to the outside of the boat and run the cable down the back of the panels to the radio, Frank,,,
I'm Not CRAZY, my view on reality is just different to YOURS,,,

Rob, Why go for an FM radio when you can get a DAB radio? I have a DAB in the car and even when listening to stations like Radio Norfolk, it's always through the digital platform.

Try and keep aerial as vertical as possible. GRP or wood doesn't affect the signal very much. Aluminium framed windows can affect the signal if close to the aerial, so can other metal work. I have mine in the bow locker only a foot above water level, and it picks up local stations ok. But to be fair, there are not that many stations that you can pick up in that area anyway. For best signals, the higher the better, and if the aerial is bolted through say a metal biscuit tin, acting as a ground plain, then this can improve the reception too. But you shouldn't need to go that far. Try it in a locker, it doesn't need to be on deck, unless you have a steel or aluminium hull.
best regards, Richard. I can't wait to be back on the Broads.

I have a Hampton and on advice from Lord Paul I connected the centre Arial wire to my bow rails through one of the securing bolts that I replaced with a longer one and by adding an extra nut it works great. I'm loving'it
