Hi

Does any one have any views / recommendations on a new navigation system?  Budget is an issue!

Radar, chartplotter with radar overlay, GPS, log, depth, AIS, etc?  Ideally an expandable system so I can add bits as needed, also with a repeater screen.

Many thanks

Robin

!!  Do you shin up to the highest point to see through fog whilst plumbing the depth contours and plotting at the same time?!

Got charts etc, but want an all-in-one to run alongside the manual way.  At the moment, the radar arch looks like a hedge-hog and it's time to declutter.  Would be nice if the instruments talked to each other.

No, one at a time, plus taking a fix, checking the log,
waggling the tiller and pulling the strings Cool Indifference

Judging by the replies so far Robin, you'd probably be more successful asking your question on the the much more technical YBW forums:

http://www.ybw.com/forums/index.php

It's a much discussed subject on there, with some very useful opinions and experiences.

I use a Northstar Explorer 657 myself, which neatly integrates log, gps, fishfinder and chartplotter. It uses C map cartridges, which have quite detailed charts of the Broads, as well as normal coastal navigation.

It doesn't have radar or AIS though but will "talk" NMEA...

edit - I had to edit my link to their forum as the YBW search result code drops out after an hour or two.  It was showing quite a lot of interesting chatter about integrated nav systems when I searched...

Robin, do yourself a big favour and have a chat with Kevin Smith at Yachtbits on 01502 569079.

Yachtbits are at Lowestoft and enjoy massive experience of all electronic marine devices and their installation and maintenance - you'll pick up all sorts of essential tips you hadn't expected.

Jerry.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Strowager - thanks for the link neighbour, will be ploughing through the ybw forum too.

I met Kevin at Yachtbits the other month when he reprogrammed my icom VHF with a new MMSi number - really knew his stuff.

Thanks all

Robin
