I gather from reading forums that the Garmin eTrex Handheld GPS System
is the answer to all my prayers, but, which one is the best for the Norfolk
Broads.

Any handheld gps will give your speed and direction while moving, which unit will depend on what other features you want, road based satnavs often have the water in the wrong place as soon as you venture away from a road.
I have a lowrance chartplotter on board and use their freedom maps card (F18 I think)when inland and it's pretty good, not sure how good their handhelds are though, the garmin 60csx I have as backup is an excellent unit except for the mapping isn't very good to use, mind you my maps are about 5 years old so they may have improved since then.

Firstly granyfink welcome to the forum there will be plenty along to inform you what is best but i my self use the etrex as it is normaly used for walkers and as such will go down to the slow speeds that you need on the broads also you can set it to remember the route you have taken so that it will show you the route back and inform you of any bends in the rivers ect this is particuarly handy when night naving.

I'm lovin'it

We have the etrex system as well, as Clive says it is accurate to point one of an mph.  It also has a feature under the navigation setting to show course and just the speed in large type

I've been playing around with a new toy... my Delorme PN-60 http://www.delorme.com/ but for general use I think I still prefer my old Garmin eTrex Legend. But just like Leo said... any gps will give you that feature. Depends on the other bells + whistles that might float your boat.

GPS works with a 3D fix, it therefore measures speed over ground in all directions. Very accurate in a straight line not so accurate when going up a tight cornered river as it measures the sideways movement. Hence much better in a centre cockpit than rear or forward steer.
I use mine to calibrate my paddlewheel log in a straight line and then consult both. The difference between them is really noticed when boxing the tide or running with it.

I would like to thank everyone for their input. Special thanks to Clive for
the welcome message. Can you tell me which eTrex system you are
operating, as I'm not which model to buy. I only have a small boat, its a
Commadore 17.

Before parting with your hard earned cash check if your airtime provider will give you an upgrade to an I-phone or a smart phone like the Nokia N8 or E7.
These have GPS built in with an added advantage that they do not just rely on satellites but will take a 2D fix from their masts as well.

I tend to use a cycling app on my samsung galaxy phone. But I am not sure of the accuracy of sat nav gadgets. I remember some years ago ther was talk that locations were shifted, as it was originally a military application.

Is this still the case ?

Oh and the other advantage is I can always phone home and ask her indoors to put the kettle on.
