sorry if this sounds a little vague and if anyone could help i would be very grateful

the four cylinder ford mermaid marine diesel engine (i think its 80 hp)could anybody tell me if this is the engine usualy fitted in Transit vans but marinised

No most likely it is the small D series truck engine either Dorset or Dover, This can be either "upright" or "Layed over" Super engine run forever.
You can tell the difference Transit engine had a plastic front cover for the cam belt, the Dover is gear driven cam.

George I am sure the said engine is on a chain rather than a belt .it also mounted upright ,i think i need to take a closer look at this
