Hi, my name is Jonathan. I was a naval officer back in the 70's and had the privelege to use the Fairey Huntresses off Dartmouth and picket boats and Capella etc. Can anyone suggest where I should start looking for a 7+ berth traditional motor launch or motor sailer for hire on a last minute holiday essential to giving my overworked wife a relaxing break? If all the web sites for boat hire on the Broads say 'nothing available' does that really mean nothing doing or is there some little gem of a boatyard tucked away with just the right sort of vessel.....? Tell me if I am being completely unrealistic!

Hi JK

Have to tried phoning around the various yards for cancellation?

That would be about the best you could do and you would get first hand information right up to date.

Sorry forgot my manners.
Welcome to the site and hope you enjoy it too.

Hello Jonathan and welcome Smile

Could be difficult as it is smack in the middle of the school holiday period and this year there are fewer boats than ever available for hire.

Depends also what you mean by last minute, like now or in a couple of weeks, but you could try here.

http://www.pacificcruisers.co.uk/

Check their 2006 availability.

Regards

John

Quick, how many blasts was it for "I am manouvering with difficulty" !!!

Thanks Lord Paul and Richard for the welcome and prompt replies. I will try out your suggestions. For novices on the Broads would you suggest North or South?

Hi Jonathan and welcome to the forum  Smile

i would suggest as above phoning some of the larger yards direct, and the larger ones may have more chance they have had a cancellation.

You could try Norfolk Broads direct, Richardsons, Barnes Brinkcraft, or Moores.

There is also a chance you may be able to get some very nice land based accommodation with a day boat via
Brinkcraft, Norfolk Broads direct, or At The Waveney River centre nr. Beccles.

As to North versus south, its really down to personal prefarence. The Northern rivers will be very busy at this time of year, the southern rivers quieter, the tidal range is less on the northern rivers upper reaches, the southern its greater with a much stronger current. Both have their share of great pubs and resturants. Some say the northern areas are more picturesque, but there is great wildlife on the southern areas, so take your pick Playful Wink

I hope you manage to get something sorted out, and have a lovely holiday.

Julia

Thanks very much Julia,
What a welcoming forum! There must be something very special about the Broads. I will check out the yards you suggest and the land based accomm. Sounds like a good alternative

Jonathan

Thanks John,
I realise it is a bit overoptimistic to pick up something at the height of the season. Pacific Cruisers do in fact have something, albeit plastic, of the right size so thanks very much for that idea.
Regards,
Jonathan
PS  It was a long time ago that I sat my Rule of the Raod exams! Was it 6 short blasts? Maybe i am confusing it with the emergency rescue code.
