Hi well its been a few years. I'm returning to the broads on the 10 off on fair statesman looks like a very nice boat but soon find out. Question is what is the chances of getting under ludham bridge with a 7'10 airdraft. I know it's not the ideal boat but I'm struggling to find one everywhere is booked up. Going to be like August but without the weather

Is your visit imminent ? There are river levels to consider as well as tides, and when we were down a few days ago the water was pretty high. There's been a lot of rain since too. However, we've had a hire boat @ 8" plus ( think it was 8" 4) and managed to get through Ludham with just a bit of planning. We've had that boat about three times and only once did we arrive at Ludham to go done to Ranworth but have to wait (and stay overnight there) for low water the next morning. So I'm thinking you'll be fine at less than 8 feet if you take note of low water times and time your passage accordingly, but others will no doubt come along with more info for you. Our own boat is 8'6' with canopy up and so we always drop the bar which takes us down to just below 7', and we regularly go up through the bridge pretty much whenever we fancy ( 2020 and Covid being the year of exception as visits have been limited!) Take care, and enjoy your break, Karen

Just as an aside, where did you get the info that your hire boat airdraft is 7"10? I'm thinking Fair Statesman is a pretty big boat with dual steering positions .... Karen

Ah, yes, you are correct and that's the airdraft quoted on NBD for when the boat is "prepared" for passage. I'd say use the tide tables link ( in red) at the bottom of the forum pages , and plan accordingly. They are some of the most reliable tables, often used by boaters on The Broads. You can change the dates in there for the week of your break, then just check on river levels generally when you are picking your boat up - they'll be able to tell you if levels are high or not at the start of your week. And you can check if there's lots of rain due ( hopefully not!) Have a great time, Karen

"Hi" You should be okay as we have a sedan and she is 8.4 plus the marker at Ludham is a little out so you do have about 3 to 4 inches spare to what the marker is showing, but if your not too sure you can always ask George to help you whom you will find in the boatyard, one of the best around for work & helping out.
Kindest Regards Mike

We have never had to drop our canopy to get through so have always gone through at 8foot aircraft. If the bridge marker says 8 foot it's probably 8foot 2 or 3, so if the bridge marker says there is enough room you'll get through no problem. Enjoy the Ant

Adi, I should have mentioned that it's always me that says drop the canopy anyway, and nearly always as we pass under the bridge Mike reaches his arm up and says " see, I told you we could get through with the canopy up" I think I must have had a bad dream about going under a bridge once, cos it's fair to say I always make a ( mostly unnecessary ) fuss about getting safely under Is it just that thing about women and spacial awareness...
