Sorry if this been asked before. We looking at San Fernando from Richardson's.  Looking at it doesn't seam to have a windscreen wiper on it. So does this mean we can not cruise if it is raining?

sorry if it a stupid question and if posted in wrong place.

You will be ok. It’s not like a car as you’re not going fast. That said, the harder it rains, the easier it is to see if the is no window wiper. Drizzle is the worst. Rain_ex applied to the glass can help. If all else fails, appoint a crew member to stand outside, armed with a squeegee, while you pilot the boat from the dry  Smile .

Cheers

Although they are more prevalent now, wipers were not common not so long ago. I also found that the majority I encountered were worse than useless!

When gathering suggestions for the next Nancy Oldfield cruiser from drivers two of the most common were  requests were for car standard wipers and demisters. We all use the washing up liquid trick on the inside of course, but a sudden change can catch you out and I have indeed driven down Lime Kiln Dyke with another driver outside with a squeegee. Another time, on Barton, I said that I had no idea where I was heading and was told I was aiming towards Turkey Broad! There were wipers but they were useless and so noisy. Cars have had decent wipers forever so why not boats.

I would admit that the only wiper I ever had on a boat that worked to any degree was this one! But only in desperation!

https://www.sheridanmarine.com/product/hand-windscreen-wiper

Available from other sources likely at a cheaper price!

We had one of these manual wiper blades on our first boat and they were effective albeit a stretch to reach comfortably from the helm position and a pain to operate for any length of time. We now have an Elysian 27 aft cockpit with an electric wiper. I am in the process of changing this from the old basic blade, which s noisy and ineffective, to a car type arm and blade and moving it to the large centre screen instead of the helm screen. I will re-site the wiper motor when I can get to the boat for an overnight as I live 6 hours away.
Ray.
