It is indeed massive and I've seen hirers struggle with Mirage and her sister ship Brabazon so many times over the years I've lost count.  Most notably in Loddon and at Rockland.

I often wonder whether such a large boat (especially as it has no modern toys, bowthruter etc) should be hired to complete novices.

Incidentally, could someone clarify something for me... I seem to remember a bylaw about the River Chet limiting craft over 46' to a certain amount of preplanned trips per year.  Does this apply to Mirage and Brabazon?

We're not absolute novices this will be our 4th trip  have.had finesse & ultimate gem from richardsons but not much choice for 6 single blokes on south waters. 6 ft longer than used to. Would it be much harder to handle. We tend to bow in & pull it in to rest. Stern mooring is diff, on best of days. Done ranworth 1st attempt in April & looked like prose. She does look like a beast   We take it easy. Last time £120 fuel we got back £ 78. Looks like south rivers are a bit wider than north. Only got 3 days so not going to Brendon'just cruising
Hopefully no potter or small river before able to turn round in. All info very welcome.  Ps we love the boating thrill & do not abuse it  better than 3days aboard.  Can't wait

No, as the vessel size bylaws for maximum length only
apply to vessels first registered after 31 March 1992.
Both Mirage and Brabazon would have been first
registered prior to that date.

Hi Chalkey,
Did you look at Pacific Cruisers.
They are on the South side. I can't see any mention of no All male parties in their terms & conditions.

Boats are a bit smaller than 50ft.

Still Learning the Ropes.

Good morning all.

In answer to your query about Mirage.  We have never hired that particular Alpha Craft, but looking at our history of hiring we have hired her 'smaller sister' - 'Shooting Star' once plus 'Swift' twice.  They were both excellent boats.  We did see Mirage in April when we were up there for our first week in Moonlight Shadow.  Mirage looked a little bit 'tired' which was surprising so early in the season.  Mind you she is getting quite old now as a hire boat.

This caused me to look into our record of hiring before we went 'syndicated'!

Shooting Star (once) and Swift (twice) from Alpha
Silver Mystique from Silverline (twice)
Swan Reflection from Swan (the old one) twice, Swan Ranger (once)
Broom Cadet (twice) the old one
Alexander Cruisers - Aimee

All from Brundall

Star Gem 1 from Richardsons

Adding up the expenditure on these hires was quite frightening!

Best wishes.

SueH
