...the precise location of this photo, and (for extra points) the name of the boat. It dates back to 1959 (when I had hair!) and has just surfaced in the family archive. I don't actually recall seeing it before. This is me on my very first trip to the Broads. I can remember that the boat was hired from Herbert Woods, had no engine and we stayed on the northern rivers.
I suspect the location is the Hickling area, rather than Barton, but can't determine whether it's coming off the broad, coming out of Meadow Dyke, or entering Candle Dyke.
Can anyone with a long enough memory pin-point the location? I don't remember the name of the boat either, so that's anyone's guess.

No idea on location but I suspect that if the boat was from Herbert Woods then it would have been a Perfect Lady as they did not have engines and the Leading Ladies did!

Hi it looks like ging towards Deep Dyke at the end of Heigham Sound. don't think it is a Perfect Lady because as PL cabin raises in the middle.

If i had guess it would be just entering the Thurne by the dyke to the Lion Inn

Definitely not near Thurne Mouth. If you look carefully, there are two channel marker posts in the distance.

I would guess that you are sailing upstream on Heigham Sound with the entrance to Candle Dyke immediately on your right.

I think I would agree with the consensus in that its at the top end of Heigham Sound going towards White Slea and Deep Go dyke - the boat is travelling upstream.
I think it is that clump of trees behind and on the right that gives it away - its exactly where it should be and the bend behind the boat corresponds with the the way the Sound bends too.
The posts are about right too and I guess the one in the distance is the junction with Meadow Dyke as the reed bed behind it is also about right as the channel to Horsey runs quite close to that.
