A holiday season challenge !

I was recently on holiday and was rather surprised to spot two Broads Cruisers in an unusual location - i took this photo from a ferry.

1. What ferry was i on?
2. What rather more famous ferry was i close to?
3. What is the connection of this ferry to our very own Richard T?
3. What was the name of the cruiser on the right, when she was in a Broads hire fleet?

Roger

Roger,

Well I'm going for the only one I can answer - surprise surprise the boat, which is an old Star Premiere from Powles - one that obviously has not been rebuilt like the Royale Lights

Hi Craig

No, not a Star Premiere, but you are very close!

In fact, there were two of these moored up - i have a better photo to display later on, which gives the name away

Well the only other boat it could be is Braemore, which was identical to Star Premiere

I'll make a stab ate the location - Windermere

Craig

Braemore it is Craig - here's another photo of her

Windermere it was not, but you might see a big clue to Q2 in the background of this photo

That took me about 5 mins of telling myself, "nah - can't be".

I think it's between Salcombe and Kingsbridge on the estuary. The ferry in the background was (I'm not sure if it still is) was the clubhouse for the ICC (Island Cruising club), as I recall it's an old merseyside ferry. Last time I saw her (2004) she was looking a bit sad.

The ferry is the former Wallasey Corporation Egremont launched in late 1951. She was used mainly on the Liverpool/ Seacombe service. I commuted on this service during the early 70's and she and her sister Leasowe could be rather livley in a Mersey swell due to them being smaller than the other fleet members. She was withdrawn in 1975 and had her machinery removed before being towed from the Mersey in 1976

Fred

As to Q1, what ferry were you on, how about the Ferry Inn? Although you really should have been at the Kings Arms and said Hi to Neil, or my Brother David, propping up one side of the bar or the other.

Richard, you are spot on! I was on the Ferry Inn Salcombe to Kinsbridge ferry, when i saw these craft.

I noticed in your article in Norfolk Afloat some months back that you used to sail with the "Island Cruising Club", which still has its floating base in the Salcombe Estuary, on the old Mersey ferry "Egremont", as described by Fred.

She is indeed looking very sad, especially alongside the fine yachts and cruisers moored in the estuary.

The 2 "Braemores" and one or two other ex Norfolk Broads cruisers are used by a letting agency as floating holiday homes - probably rather better value than the expensive holiday homes in that part of the world!  Apart from "sundecks" on their cabin tops, these cruisers look unchanged from the 1980's, when they were on the Broads.

I must remember to call in at the Kings Arms another time!

Regards, Roger
