Hi Roya,

The last time I tried sitting on a drafty railway station with a note book and pencil was about 49 years ago on my daily trip between Merton South and Sydenham Hill, to get to school in Dulwich.

Hi

Just a quick note to let people know that Broadland Memories has moved! Craig is still kindly hosting the site but the URL has changed - it is now a genuine broadlandmemories.co.uk rather than the broadlandmemories.horning.org address that it was.

If you happen to have the site listed under your favourites can you re-save the home page next time you visit to ensure that you are going to the right URL. Craig should be setting up a temporary re-direct from the old address to the new one so hopefully there won't be any problems!!

All emails for the website are also being re-directed to the new server so I may lose some along the way - if you do happen to email me and don't hear back within a couple of days then please try again!

I'm confused!  (Easily done Smile

That's the same URL as you mentioned right at the beginning of this thread.

What's changed?

Hi

I own the domain name broadlandmemories.co.uk - Craig was hosting the site for me as a sub domain on the horning.org site which meant that I was re-directing anyone who clicked on broadlandmemories.co.uk to it's actual url which was broadlandmemories.horning.org.

If anyone added my site to their favourites in Internet Explorer then it will be listed as the horning.org url rather than broadlandmemories.co.uk.

Craig has just upgraded his account with his web host which included a certain number of extra true domains. He kindly set up one of those as broadlandmemories.co.uk so that I am no longer a sub domain of horning.org. Although there will initially be a re-direct to the correct url, at some point those pages will no longer be available on the internet.

I think that is how it all works anyway and hope I've explained it correctly!  Blush

Hi All

Broadland Memories will be a year old tomorrow (3rd November), so I thought I’d take the opportunity to give a quick update on what has been happening!

You may have noticed that there have been no new additions recently, this is due to a combination of factors - the slow recovery of my hand after the operation and then my PC crashing and finally dying! Thankfully everything was backed up and the lovely fendoff built me a brand new PC. I took the opportunity to upgrade the software I use to build the website to the latest edition. The version I had been using is now quite old and there have been several new versions since. I presumed that loading the site into the new version would be fairly straightforward …… wrong !!  It has taken me quite a while to get everything up and running properly, including having to go through every page to adjust text as there were quite a few ends of sentences missing.

To cut a long story short – yesterday I successfully managed to upload a new version of the website to the internet. It is not the MK 2 version yet….. more a version 1.1 ….. there are major plans to rebuild the entire site over the winter months. It will essentially keep the same look and feel, but I hope to make it easier to use and have larger gallery photos amongst other changes. In the meantime I will continue to update the existing site, I have a backlog of photos which I should be adding over the next couple of weeks.

The new site seems to be working fine but PLEASE if you notice any problems or issues with it can you let me know. It was brought to my attention that the original site was not appearing in Firefox browsers properly, it didn’t seem to be all Firefox users but there were problems. The main issue seemed to be that special characters e.g. pound signs, inverted commas etc, were being displayed as question marks making the site somewhat scrambled! I know there are quite a few members who use Firefox, so I would be very grateful if you could check it out for me and see whether the problem still exists. The pages you are likely to have most problems with are the historical overviews.

I really have been overwhelmed by the response that the website has had in its first year – many thanks to all who have given help and advice, and also to everyone who has contributed photos and memories of Broadland or just emailed to say how many happy memories it has brought back. I have not got as far along with the history of the various eras as I would have liked but should get back on track with the research in the Spring (hopefully no more medical or PC emergencies!) I have to admit that it starts getting extremely complicated from the 1960s onwards and there is an awful lot more research and work involved in getting the overviews together ….. I will get there in the end though!

As I said – I will be continuing to add new photos and memories as they are sent in to me. With winter now on its way, can I appeal to anyone who may be able to help to search through your lofts for your old photos, or sit down with a beer and jot down those memories ….. it really is so important to record all of this information before it is lost. As well as personal memories, I would also be interested in any information that anyone might have regarding any aspect of Broadlands history, including the histories of the various boatyards. A fascinating history of the Collins yards was sent to me by Roger Wilson which I published on Broadland Memories …. If anyone has similar articles and would be happy for me to put them onto the website then I would be very pleased to receive them. Again, I do plan to start doing research into that myself but need to get the historical overviews completed first, so I think that may well be a year or two down the line yet!

Anyway, many thanks again …… and I hope you don’t find too many problems with the website!  Scared

Carol,

Great site.  Just to confirm it seems to be working fine with Firefox.

Hi

Many thanks Jim!  Smile

Broadland Memories appears to be down at the moment .... I suspect that it is a problem with the host as all of Craigs sites are down too (Horning.org, ImageBank and the Boat Database).  Frown

Not quite sure what is going on at the moment but hopefully normal service will be resumed as soon as possible. It also means that emails to the websites are down too.
