Hi

At long last I have added a "Search" facility to Broadland Memories!!  If you are looking for information or photographs on a particular subject, boat, boatyard, building, place etc. within the archive then hopefully you will now be able to find it without wading through the whole site!

It's a Google custom search which seems to be working quite well .... although it does take a while to catch up with new additions. Google does seem to take it's time to cache an entire website, but it seems to be almost there now!

The search box can be found at the bottom of the main Archive directory page, although there is a link to it on the Home page. I hope that it will prove to be useful to anyone viewing the website.

Hi

My apologies if anyone has tried to access the Broadland Memories website this morning as it has been offline for a while!

I needed to upload the entire site afresh this morning (which took 4 hours!) due to some major changes I have been working on over the last month or so. The majority of these are not something that most people will notice, mainly little things which will make my life easier when it comes to adding new stuff to the website. For example ... I currently have 27 pages in the 1900-1950 photo Gallery and, because I had a numbered link at the top of every page to every other page in that Gallery, it meant that if I needed to add a new page I would have to upload all the others too! This took some considerbale time so I have now changed the way that the pages link to one another.

Things you will notice are that there is now a link to the sites search facility in the header buttons on every page and the Paper & Ephemera directory has now been added to the main Archive page. That area has also had a bit or a change around with some re-organising of the sections within it.

I also got rather distracted by completely revising and re-writing the Pre 1900 history which is now very much expanded! There are also new additions to  various photo Galleries too including another collection of Edwardian photos c1905 ... lots of wherry pics in those including one of 13 wherries crossing Breydon together!! I have a bit of a backlog of photos which I will work through and add to the site over the next monthor so - if anyone has sent me things which haven't appeared on the site yet then please accept my apologies and bear with me .... I am getting there!

I have not had time to check the entire site yet ... but I think everything has uploaded successfully! However, if anyone notices any problems (missing pages, photos, news cuttings etc) then please, please let me know via PM or email so that I can sort it out as quickly as possible.

Many thanks!

Carol

Hi

Ok I know I'm a bit slow on the uptake but I found the Broadland Memories site last night through this forum, I had never seen seen it before (obviously) and I just wanted to say that I found it fascinating.

My family started taking my as a baby in the early 60s and to see the pics from then was great.  Having them sorted into in decades is a brilliant idea, as is the 'then and now' section.  Had me enthralled all night looking through it all.

I sent a link over to my sister who showed the photo of Brooms in 1975 to my mum and dad, they loved it as their boat was in the pic I think!

It has inspired me to look through my albums again.  I am sure I have a good one of Bill Soloman, a family friend and the Harbour Master at Oulton for many years (don't know if anyone remembers him).  Might even get to send some over to add my little bit, you never know.

All in all a fantastic sight! Smile

Hi

Many thanks for your kind words and I'm glad that you enjoyed looking round the website and that it inspired you to look through all your old albums again! If your mum and dad did spot their boat in one of the pictures, they will be the second family to have spotted themselves in someone elses holiday snaps on there!

And yes, if you do have any old photos or memories of boating on the Broads then please do send them to me!! I haven't had any time to put anything new on BM for a couple of months as there has just been too much work to do on the house and garden, but hopefully I should start getting some more bits and pieces on there soon!

I have been a little tied up over the summer months with work on the house/ garden, but am about to start getting stuck in to the backlog of submissions I have recieved over the last few months and get them on to the website over the autumn and winter.

I have also launched the new Broadland Memories Blog. It's a bit of an experiment really and I have no idea whether there will be much interest but it's intended to run alongside the main website and will give details of what is happening behind the scenes - latest submissions and additions, sneak previews of forthcoming photos etc. I also have a wealth of material which is probably unlikely to make it onto the main website so this will be somewhere that I can include some of the more interesting and quirky bits and bobs from that! I will also be including links and a bit more background info to other websites which contain photographs, videos and information relating to Broadland's past and maybe current news items and events which have a tie in to the local history.

As I said, I'm not sure whether it will work ... but I will run with it for now and see how things go!

Good to hear you will be adding more stuff to the site. Although there is already enough on there to keep me amused for hours.
My favourite section is the Now and Then photos.

Well Done Carol

Hi Carol

I think the blog is a great idea. Well done.

Is that wherry at Wroxham above the bridge heading for Coltishall? Could be Caen Meadow on the left.

Just a note to say that The Broadland Memories Blog has moved .... if you have it saved in your favourites then please click on the link below and resave it, or go to it via the link on the BM Home page.

There seems to have been sufficient interest in it over the last couple of months to continue the blog, so I have been looking into ways of self hosting it which means that I will have full control of the content and the site, and will hopefully also make it easier for visitors to leave coments. (Although they will be moderated!). I hadn't actually planned to do it just yet, but whilst waiting for the new web design software to arrive I looked into using WordPress .... I downloaded it on Tuesday and managed to get it all set up and working in a day. Yestrerday I managed to import all of the exisiting blog posts across from Blogger, with a little bit of tweaking, and it seems to be running OK. I had hoped to spend a little more time getting to know the software and learning how to customise it further, but have really been forced into going live with it today as, ironically, I discovered some major display issues with Internet Explorer in a post I put on Blogger last night. It appears to be yet another png problem but was affecting both IE7 and IE8 on a friends PC. I deleted the post from Blogger and I give up!  Blogger seems to be full of bugs and quirks and WordPress has been a little more straightforward to use. It looks rather different but I'm sure I'll get used to it!

The new URL is: http://www.broadlandmemories.co.uk/blog/

Our postie delivered the new web design software this morning so I will be looking into installing that and hopefully getting the main website up and running in it over the next week, so that I can hopefully address the IE8 display issues. If there are any display issues in the WordPress blog then I shall scream and stamp my feet!!!!  Scared
