I have two 4.5kg butane gas bottles available. £10 each. Empty but can exchange for full and save buying a bottle at a lot higher price

Cheers - Paul

Hi, I'm not very familiar with gas bottle types & sizes. So, do you still have them, are they butane, propane or....?  Can you provide dimensions of the bottles

Thanks

David

And there was me thinking that the gas company own the bottles - you only hire the bottles from them and the cost is the cost of the gas - you are not being sold the bottle as well!!!

All you need to know about Calor Gas Bottles (& its complex) Other brands are available
If you have no paperwork you can still get £7.50 back from "main stockists" including one in Norwich but only for certain sizes/types

OK, useful website but doesn't address my questions fully.

I cannot believe the price of gas bottles and refills here, absolute rip-off. Used to buy a 25lb bottle of propane for about $25.00 and refill for $7.50 back in the US. Ah well.

The company giving you £7.50 back with no papers is what's contributing to messing it all up. Without that the original hirer of the bottles should return them when not needed anymore to get full refund with his paperwork. If firm's are giving money back  without paperwork it allows people to sell them, which they aren't theirs to sell. The gas maybe but only the gas supplier owns the bottles. It also avoids the law suit of someone buying an untested bottle that's been known kicking about in someones possession for years untested. If that blew up who would be sueing who? I would personally as a gas engineer never sell a bottle but return it as they get tested every return for filling.
It also is to try and stop these folks who are competing for the Darwin awards by cutting up a gas bottle full of vapours to turn them into a woodburning stove.
The more bottles messed about with and left kicking around in sheds is what drives the price up as the supplier has to make more vessels to transport the gas to the end point if use rather than reusing them.

Well,
a) bringing back a bottle you have had for a few years does not get you a full refund, it reduces year by year.

b) a bottle is not useful unless it has gas and you can't get gas unless the bottle is tested, probably via an exchange system.

c) the same would apply if we bought the bottle in the first place instead of these ludicrously high rental charges.

It works that way elsewhere in the world.

a) Correct but not fair. It should be a full refund with papers which would avoid all the problems as people would look after them knowing they get a good bit of money back when they don't need that size anymore.'Should'be no papers no money.
b) Correct but that's what we have now anyway.
c) If a gas supplier fills your bottle and doesn't know the history who has liability if she goes bang especially if you sell it on.
I don't think any country has a perfect system of everything needed for daily life  but who knows, maybe. I certainly don't think we do but we are where we are.
