Interesting some years ago a pair of swans at Brogrove Mill used to end up with distinctly ginger necks and heads because of feeding in the iron rich water of the dykes around there I’m just wondering whether with all the new dyke & ditch work the same is happening elsewhere or whether this is due to something in their diet, like pink flamingos   Interbreeding with Geese tends to create an unswanlike appearance and the offspring are sterile so there is no risk of there being any throwbacks.

Hi Bill, our local swans here in derbyshire have similar coloured heads at this time of year, and someone remarked it may be something to do with breeding season, as often they grip and pull at each others head feathers during mating.
It could be a stain from the contents of another swans mouth and beak, eg part digested brownish grass, similar to whats found on a compost heap.

Speaking to a bird rescue chap last year who was picking up a grey lag with a broken wing at my old mooring. We pointed out a swan with a ginger neck and head.

He informed us this was very common and associated with swans who fed off of vegetation in salt water areas.
