That looks a very worthwhile and interesting project, so good luck. Are/will the decks be varnish or oiled ? Does she have a drop keep ? Amazingly large rudder, or it may be the camera angle

You can buy small quantities of oxalic acid for £2-3, just Google it.

I have used Oxalic Acid which is available as a dried powder which is then added to water. We used to use this stuff to clean wooden decks of supply vessels. I know it is commercially available but don't know if you can get small quantities. The best tool I know of for scrapping down varnish is the traditional cabinet scraper, you just have to learn how to sharpen them properly. The problem with using teak oil on decks is that they turn black over time, best just cleaned with a good old fashioned scrubbing brush and (if you dare) a bit of caustic soda..........something you do need to take precautions with!!!

If you use oxalic acid to lighten the wood, be sure to wash off well and neutralise with dilute sodium bicarbonate. any residual acidity will probably inhibit curing of varnish or paint. In my experience, bicarb brings out the colour of mahogany.

Hi. I have seen from the pictures the boat you have bought and she looks lovely. Well done for rescuing her , with time and effort she will be restored to her former glory. I have myself used oxilic acid and it really does remove stubborn Stains. Please keep us all updated with pictures. Wonderful project. Most envious.

You can still buy tar varnish from Norfolk Marine,I’ve known of tar being scraped off a hull and burnt off with a heat gun but a horrible job
