Anyone know when the Trinity House lightship was replaced by the ex Swedish Gunboat as the Sea Cadets' training ship 'Lord Nelson' in Norwich. I know the new one was around in 2006, and I've seen a 2001 photo showing the old one.

Additionally if anyone has a good photo of the ex-lightship to illustrate her on the database, please contact me, credit will be given for any used

Hi Craig,

Please note this extract from http://units.ms-sc.org/norwich/About

Re' - Mrs Irene Spinks - Chairman Unit Management Committee
"In 2004 Irene joined the Unit Management Committee and became Chairman in July 2005. Irene enjoyed seeing the new HQ being towed up the river in September 2005, but didn't realise quite how much work was required before the ship was commissioned in September 2007".

Reckon an email; requesting more info here: norwichseacadets@hotmail.co.uk
might get you the info' you need.

Cheers, Andy

Quite a few reputable Google hits corroborate the new one arriving in Sept 2004, so I think maybe the Unit's Chairman has quoted 2005 wrongly:

"From Ships Monthly , Dec 2004:

Double Nelson

Former Swedish Navy fast missile attack craft Vale arrived in Norwich on 1 September to begin a new career as the headquarters ship TS Lord Nelson for Norwich Sea Cadets (SCC). She replaces a historic former lightvessel that has been the cadets’ headquarters for 25 years.

Thanks guys that's brilliant, although I think I need new glasses, as I'd already extracted all the technical specs off that German site and didn't notice the 2004 entry

If you want the stats for the current one Craig, there's a Swedish Wiki page at:

http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Vale_(P155)

( £30,000  , what a bargain, cheaper than an ex-hire 40 footer)  Smile

Looks like its on its way this weekend here are two tugs moored for the night in front of the Lord Nelson Pub en-route to Norwich from where it is, contrary to the still un-corrected story in EDP to Great Yarmouth
