Thinking that October might be a bit cold for boats, we decided to try one of the Herbert Woods apartments in the former boatyard water tower at Potter Heigham. After a stop on the way at the Stokesby tea room for lunch, arrived at Herbert Woods at 2.30. The booking form gave us the code for the car park, and collected the Key to Swallowtail apartment from reception. Parking in the designated place, we then unloaded and climbed the 2 flights of stairs, (33 steps). Being at the top of the building you get really nice views on 3 sides, and all the boatyard activity. Swallowtail is fitted out to a very high standard, and I would say fairly recently. All rooms have storage heaters, and 2 can be operated for instant heat. The Kitchen is well equipped and even has a dish washer, tablets for this, salt and pepper, first aid kit, and dish cloths are there for use. The double room has what is known as king size bed, and the other has 2 singles. The Toilet bath/shower room can be accessed from the main bedroom or hall. The lounge area has 2 settees, and a 40" TV and DVD player.

To continue, Saturday evening we drove to Catfield, for eating at 'The Crown' It was Saturday and quite busy, but no great delay, and a good menu choice, would definitely recommend. The plan for Sunday was drive to Mundsley, and back along the coast, weather was variable, but we did get to see Stow windmill, which is about to be turned into holiday accommodation for 2017. Lunch was at a cafe near to the Happisburgh lifeboat station, All day there seemed to be nowhere to park without paying. Hemsby was a bit of a shock! did not know such places existed. Back at P.H. it was nice to have tea and cake at Lathams. Sunday evening drive to Ludham and food at the Kings Arms, where we had been before by boat, and once again it did not disappoint. Just out of interest we drove down to Womack water, and were surprised to see that every space was taken along the staithe, so lots of Boats out.

Sunday was to be a boating day, with half a day hire of a day boat included in the Swallowtail hire, (full day with a week hire) first it was breakfast at the Flour and bean across the road. Took over the day boat at 9.30, having been fitted out with self inflating flotation aids. These old day boats are quite noisy with their 2 cylinder diesels, must admit that after about 5 minutes it quietened down a bit, so it was through the bridge ( 6'3"), and heading for Horsey, weather mostly fine, but crossing the Mere there was a hail storm! difficult to see without windscreen wiper. We were pleased that the windpump coffee shop was open and the toilets! the sun now broke through and so it remained for the rest of the day. Next we headed for the Pleasure boat Inn, where we had soup and bread and some Wherry. Surprised that there were no visitors on the mooring. After a sit in the sunshine, I thought it was a good chance to navigate Catfield dike, about the only piece of water we had not visited, always reading that the dike was narrow and difficult to turn etc. well we were most surprised how wide it was, true 2 12ft wide boats may have to get close to the reeds to pass, but as it is straight I dont think there would be any problem, at the end there is a staithe and room for 2 to 3 boats, I dont think that I would venture there it anything over 30ft because of the turning problem. a mile walk would take you into Catfield village and the attraction of the Crown inn. The whole day we saw one sailing cruiser on Horsey, 2 day boats heading back to Hickling, and one of Horizons low cruisers as we got back to Potter Heigham. Back at Herbert Woods at 4 p.m. and they did not charge us any more for the extra 2 hours we had been out. Some shopping at Lathams was next, and that evening we drove back to Hickling for eating, a few in the bar, but certainly not busy.

Tuesday, going home day, first we watched t boats being craned out of the water on to transporters, then handed back the keys, and headed to Lathams for breakfast. Heading for Great Yarmouth to visit the 'Time and Tide Museum' that I had read about. This place is really worth a visit, but due to parking in the wrong car park (there is one just opposite) did not have enough time to do it justice, or visit their cafe. But do allow a couple of hours. Getting away from G.Y. we had a lunch stop at 'The Bell' at St Olaves, then it was away from The Broads, and back to Kent. Until next year.

Yes I thought it was from Richardsons, and wondered why it was being lifted out at Potter Heigham. So yes Bridgecraft. All the names had been removed, although the registration was still on the stern, D something, I forgot to write it down!
