I've mentioned before in several postings that my wife (Tina) and I, with two friends, have hired out Fair Admiral for a short break during the first week of November 08.

With that in mind and having a couple of days to spare, Tina and I popped up to the Broads for a couple of days this week to get the lay of the land.

Base camp for our trip was the Wroxham Hotel. The hotel was unusual for two main reasons: 1) It was not called the ROYS hotel and 2) combining hot tuna and mushroom in a deep fried crust Scared

Decided to get a feel for the Broads by hiring a dayboat for a couple of hours and tootled on down to Wroxham and Salhouse Broads. We probably looked ridiculous to the owners of the rather swanky boats we saw but we held our heads high and completed a turn on the Broads without the aid of bow thrusters   Smile . Thought better of trying a stern mooring..... we'd done enough to impress so left Salhouse Broad with due haste. Kept thinking to myself that Fair Admiral might present just a little bit more of a challenge when we come back in November.
Incidentally, saw neither Fair Admiral 1 or 2 on our little jaunt which was disappointing.

Followed a few boats in a convoy back to Wroxham... good job we were last in the line as I just caught sight of a craft charging out of Barnes Brinkcraft with no thought that any one else might be on the river. The lead boat took swift action by turning hard to port and the rest of us rammed (gently placed Scared ) our boats into full reverse to bring them to a quick stop. Now, I'm a boating novice but anyone with any sense would have just nosed the boat out of the yard real slow and checked .... not this guy though. He did look a bit sheepish but as the saying goes " all's well that ends well".

The following day we travelled down to Horning by car, then Potter Heigham and finally Acle. Along the way I suggested we drop by the Norfolk Yacht Agency to take a look a what was for sale. There was a horrified look on my wife's face when I got talking to a boat owner whose gin palace was up for sale for a few quid. A full half hour tour followed when the sum of £97500 was mentioned. I was implacable... didn't blink for a second .... said I thought it seemed a reasonable price for such a fine boat ... the Mrs. was by now back on the marina gesturing to me. She's like that sometimes, just when I am enjoying myself she has to spoil things. She did buy me some lottery tickets though to "put towards the boat if we win" ... as she put it.

Finally and just by chance we got to see Fair Admiral 1 going past when we stopped at Acle which rounded of the day nicely.

From what little we saw of the Broads we know that our holiday in November is something to really look foward to .... now as for tuna and mushroom bakes... well that's another thing altogether!

Maybe we'll see some forum members in November.

Why is it that they can't understand the concept of "window shopping"? Playful Wink
The joys of leading on some poor unsuspecting bloke who thinks he might be able to shift the floating money hole onto some other poor sucker! (As long as you're not the poor fool desperate to sell Mad ) Added to all that, the fun of poking around someone else's boat, mentally criticising the way the ropes are stowed, slack halyards, dirty bilges......... Wink  I'm amazed you only managed half an hour, I reckon on at least an hour before I casually mention that 'of course I tend to stick to wind power as, overall, a proper boat is cheaper to run, more peaceful and better for the environment!' Evil Grin

Hi John

It would be a dream come true for me if I were to have my own boat on the Broads .... maybe one day?

We are looking forward to our trip and it's good to have your endorsement re: winter on the Broads.

Regards

Simon
