Just wondering how common if at all it is for boats to be broken into whilst moored at the big centres whilst their owner's were at the pub/shopping?

Very common....I just leave all the bread on the deck now to stop the damn ducks breaking the locks.

In all seriousness.....I have never heard of a boat being broken into as theft.
Just some vandalism stories from some places.

No doubt others can enlighten further.

Sadly it does happen and not necessarily just in town centres.  During the fishing season it is not unusual to hear of rods being removed from cabin tops where they have been left whilst their owners have gone for a walk.  It’s almost impossible to make boats 100% secure especially in hot weather when you don’t want to hermetically seal the boat up.  Most thefts are I think opportunistic so it’s the usual advise don’t leave valuables in plain view, take money and credit cards with you.  Keep doors locked (But don’t take the float off the door keys.  Lucas starters keys are two a penny but door locks are all different!!)

I'm going to stick my neck out here and thereby probably resulting in tempting fate etc.

I've been on the Broads on a hire boat for at least one week every year since 1960, and NOT ONCE have we suffered any type of thefts what-so-ever.

There that's opened ourselves right up eh?  -  Griff

Hi All.

I have Just come back home from my hol, I have moored up at Yarmouth and Norwich without incident. Years ago we had our ropes let off at Norwich but now It is a lot safer to moor there. The only thing with Norwich, especially at weekends, is all the local revelleres on their way home at 3am, Rather noisy!!!

Regards

Steve

I had a boat hook stolen off the roof at Norwich so now I even put the boat hook, lifebelt & mop inside when we go out.  That is anywhere, not just Norwich.  No other problems.

Not batteries but it looks like NBD had a couple of gas bottles nicked of a boat reversed onto the roadside car park...

Never lock your boat, the contents are rarely worth more than the cost to put right the damage. If you do have valuables take them with you. Leave a 4 pack of Stella Artois in plain sight. Also a dead outboard motor if you have one, make worthless items easy to steal and they won’t darken your cabin step again. Mouse traps in drawers are not allowed though....
