Hi

I need some help again! I have been sent this photograph by Adrian Bell who recently contributed some of his parents 1950s pictures to my archive. The only details written on the back of th picture below was "Horning 1951" but points out that this was rather a large vessel to have been on the Northern rivers. Can anyone shed any light on what it was and if it was indeed around the Horning area?

Many thanks!!

Carol

A mystery indeed.

She does look like she was designed to go quite fast, though the hull doesn't resemble any British or US military vessel that I'm familiar with. Might she be a German or Italian war prize? Certainly the bows look like they may well have been designed with the intention of launching torpedoes, and that would also explain why the hull has so much reserve buoyancy at the sides.

Are you thinking of MTB 102, or is there another vessel of which I'm unaware? If it is MTB 102, then it's definitely not that boat, the hull is completely different, and I think she's a bit larger.

It's always a little tricky to tell from one picture, especially when a boat's been extensively converted, but there's a part of my brain that screams 'E-boat' when it sees those bows. Here's a link to a picture of what I think she may once have looked like.

It does look similiar to one of the larger Fairmile boats like a Fairmile D although I'm far from an expert.

Hi Carol,

It certainly looks like the bend in the river after Cockshoot and before the Ferry Inn.  There is still a derelict wind pump there that looks just like that.   How on earth it could have got up there, I can't imagine.

Regards

Simon

Hi

Thanks for your input so far. Further to Jonny's comment about it possibly being the boat at Norwich I have had a trawl back through the forums photo gallery and came across this picture taken by Nigel (Woodwose) in 2005 - hope you don't mind me posting it here Nigel!

Doesn't look like the same boat to me though?

Hi Carol,

Had a bit of spare time this lunchtime so had a quick search for this boat and came up with this??MTB 653

It may be way off target as I'm no expert on things floating!!
