on my last trip on the broads we decided one day to visit rockland staithe for the night on approching the staithe i noticed there was only one mooring right in the corner.now with being an seasoned boater i knew i could not turn and go stern on'having a 44ft boat.so i decided to moor straight on.one of the private boats next morning could not help saying something as he left.something to do with bad mooring and should know better finger pointing at the forum logo...fair enough if i could have moored stern on of co*rs* i would have.i was not going to get into a debate/argument over it.once a few boats had moved away we turned the boat around useing ropes..just how bad a practice is this type of mooring...anyone else ever had to moor this way....

That looks like an "alongside" mooring to me.
The only thing I`d have done differently is add a spring line from the bow to that post near your stern, to prevent the bow being pressed against the quay-heading, and risking being caught on it as the tide dropped.

I was there and there was nothing wrong with your aproach and mooring, if you're tied to the bank and not moving about incomoding anybody then your mooring is OK. Also you did the right thing by turning the boat on the ropes rather than shunting about on the engine. In fact it may have been me who actually said as we left "Hi, I would have introduced myself but I couldn't see your logo when you were parked the other way around" (pointing to the now visible logo), I thought you were just being miserable but you may have just misheared and chose to ignore me.

no it was not you i was referring to this boat had come down from the river to turn at the staithe early before you left im sorry if you had let on and got no reply.i persume it was my brother who ignored you.i wish i had known it was you i would certainly have.. had a good chat with you .once again i apologise and by the way you have got a realy nice boat  ps if some of us looked miserable the reason can be found under another post..in holiday tales...title cautionary tales

Flippin 'eck Robbie, really pleased it wasn't me who upset you. after reading your other postI wish even more I had made my presence known, not surprised you were not happy bunnies after reading the other post. I would have taken them off your hands and marooned them on the inner dowsing if I'd known. Just because they were unhappy tht's no reason to screw your much looked forward to holliday. Hope to see you around next year minus the charmess baggage.

I always moor bows to where everyone else is stern to.
I can't fit my door from the inside so everyone can look in the boat from the shore if I'm the other way round.
Also, my outboard is hanging off the back and it gets in the way. If I wanted to moor stern to I would use the anchor to hold the boat off the mooring leaving a short step ashore. That's how it lies when bows to anyway.
Apart from that, as previous, you look like you are side on anyway, I moored just where that yacht is when I was there.

From what I've seen, bow-on moorings are perfectly reasonable... I can think of several marinas that I've been to where they are the norm.
The issue, in terms of the boat, is: does the mooring protect her (and other boats) from damage. Most Broads Motor Cruisers are square-sterned, so lie happily stern-on. But most could equally lie bow-on in the right situation. Indeed, it occurs to me that at the Ranworth meeting in June, it might have been quite convivial for some of the M/C's to have moored with their fronts towards the shore.

yes i did not know if i was breaking any bylaws or not and given better conditions would always moor stearn on.thanks david for your post we must have come across as a right anti social lot.hope to make amends next year im off to bake a large humble pie

I suspect about one third of the boats in our marina are moored bow first. Not a good idea if you are leaving it there all season as the bows will tend to scrape against the quay. Not a problem if left overnight though. Don't worry about it. And don't think for one minute that private owners are an authority on mooring!!
