As many of you are aware DEFRA responded to the consultation regarding the forthcoming Broads Bill. The letter was NOT included in other information that was circulated to interested parties. The story of this made the E.P.P., local paper, and raised not a few hackles.

At the recent Navigation Committee meeting the Chief executive was invited to comment on the DEFRA letter and why it had not been presented, along with other information, at either that or the previous meeting. The Committee were told that the DEFRA letter was not of interest, not helpful to the Navigation Committee.

Neither was a letter supporting the Bill by the Bishop of Norwich of much interest, and certainly not helpful, but we all had a copy of that!

It begs the questions as to how many other 'uninteresting, unhelpful' responses to the Drafts of the Broads Bill were also withheld.

From an Authority that is always promoting transparency it does leave a rather nasty taste in the mouth.

Basically it is unacceptable censorship by an unelected quango. It is my firm, personal belief that the DEFRA letter should have been submitted with other consultative responses.

The Freedom of Information Act does, so I understand, allow access to ALL responces to the consulation process by the general public. Might I suggest that you write, or e-mail the Aurhority, and ask for copies of ALL correspondance from DEFRA in regard to the Bill. Should make good bedtime reading.

Very disturbing, Jenny, however, I doubt that it tells those of us who are interested and have been observing the Authority and its current management regime, anything that we didn`t already know or suspect!

It does beg the question though of whether people who are prepared to go to such underhand and dishonest lengths to get there own way are worthy of holding such a position.  If it were an elected position, I`m sure that the answer would be a resounding NO!! Mad

Conspiracy requires intelligence.  I'd opt for the c**k-up theory.

It isn't a case of dishonesty, more a case of believing that an unsupportive letter from DEFRA should have been produced along with other consultative letters, and reference made to it at either of the last two Nav Com meetings.

Sorry Jenny, I have to disagree with you about dishonesty:-  it`s a deliberate attempt to avoid disclosing relevant facts, (it wasn`t the BA who made the contents of the letter public) which when we`re being told that "broadly there is support for" this, that or the other, (section of the Bill) is downright dishonest!!  I realise that this is a matter of opinion, but I cannot see it any other way!

Pete

The BA Chief Exec is a intelligent, articulate man, a man determined to get what he clearly believes is best for his career and the Broads. I can only guess that the DEFRA letter was withheld as it was hoped that ongoing talks would modify DEFRA's response. But unless a later DEFRA letter is produced offering support then I think we have to accept the letter as read. Putting that letter into the public domain, at that time, clearly would not have helped the Authority gain its new Bill.

We all speed at some time in our lives, we sometimes forget to put on our seat belts, but does that make us criminals?

I would like to think that that letter was intentionally withheld with good intent, depending on which side of the fence that you sit. Personally I think that he was completely and wholey wrong and thankfully it has come back, hopefully with a vengeance. Deceitful with good intent might be a better discription.

I have informed my M.P. of what has happened.
