On Friday afternoon we were tootling along from Salhouse to Ranworth when we decided to stop off at horning for another gander at the Galley. Spotting a gap at the Swan (for the third time in a week the last space behind/in front of Southern Comfort was free.....never had such luck with moorings as i did last week!) we nipped in, moored up and went to the shops. Not a fan of Brewers Fayre, but we decided on a quick drink and sat at a table by our boat.

This was at 12:40. A very pleasant woman then came up to us and asked if it was our boat and told us the mooring was reserved for the 'Navigator' from 14:00 on. Not a problem, says i, as we had plenty of time and hadn't intended staying too long.

However, we were enjoying the stop and had another couple of drinks, then a day boat left so we dragged our boat up and left plenty of room for 'Navigator'. We didn't see the woman again but informed a couple of prospective moorers that it was 'reserved'. One, a Brinks Contessa, ignored me. Probably thought i was saving it for a mate.....i don't know, but it wasn't really any business of mine. I did feel cheesed off that i was being made to look a mug when, at 14:50, there was still no sign of 'Navigator'.

A tannoy announcement went out to Contessa's crew at 15:15 and 15:30, but they'd wandered off into Horning. When they returned and left, the woman reappeared and put up a sign saying "Reserved for Navigator". This was nowhere near the space she'd indicated earlier, but just hanging under the mooring sign....barely visible from the river as it was IN FRONT OF OUR BOAT!

Reserved mooring signs work well when they're on the quayside. They work less well when not visible and not at all well when not actually put up.

Incidentally, we never saw 'Navigator' from the time we left (c.16:00) to the time we returned (c.17:00) so i don't know what it was all about. Perhaps she's a yacht and was becalmed somewhere.....windless day, Friday!

I agree whole heartedly.

I was sitting next to you having a sandwich and pint with my Father ( a break from some work we were doing ) and saw you move your boat up but did not realise why. I tried to help the boat that came in behind ( though was taken aback by the guy in the Devil costume ! ), as I was not aware of the reservation. I hear your son tell them and they set off. Both my Father and I commented on how badly marked the reservation was, you would need binoculars and probably X-RAY specs to see through the other boats !

Would have said hello had I realised.
