I was made aware of a report this weekend which shows the worst performing sewage treatment plants in the country in 2020. I was shocked to learn that in terms of hours spent dischrging untreated sewage, Anglian Water's Knackers Wood plant at Horning was 4th. worst in the whole country! The outfall from this plant is, I believe, on the River Ant to the south of How Hill.

I always thought of Horning being an upmarket place to live, it now comes to light that it’s a bit of a sh**ty place to live.
When the tide comes in the residents of Horning say “We’re getting our own back”.??
Mind you, some of them do look a bit flushed.

I contacted Anglian water some months ago about outfall as the blue green Algae appears to be increasing . They sent me a spreadsheet of pump activations . On one site on the Bure which I am not allowed to name resulted in 1368 hours of pumping sewage and surface water directly into the river .

I seem to remember long discussions about river water overwhelming the sewer system in Horning at high spring tides with a number of solutions being suggested,thus it is not surprising they have to discharge at times till the remedial work is done?

Hi all
It took Anglian Water over a month to reply and they sent a covering email with the full printout spreadsheet . The email stated that the in depth information was for my research only and they made it very clear it was not to be published or identified . So I am not naming the site or publishing the spreadsheet.

Its no excuse I know, but it is a better than it was years ago - but then it should be!
There is no doubt that the water quality in the rivers generally is of a higher quality than it used to be, the plant life confirms this, but we also demand higher standards - Horning will also continue to have difficulties with large parts of the system below river and problems will occur.
I am not sure exactly what is being discharged but a lot of it will be storm water but to coin a phrase, I guess it will have been "screened" as well before it goes out into the river.

Anglia water has been struggling to reduce the ingress of river water for years now. The land is unstable near the river resulting in sewer breakages, as soon as they fix one place they find another.

I cannot for the life of me see why this should be a secret, although I respect the person who originally provided it for not disclosing.
It is so sad that there is a need to keep this sort of information out of the public eye.
