"The majority of the users of the right-hand lane are travelling to Norwich, the few who do your “trick” to turn left (and yes, I’ve done it myself to avoid being trapped in left-hand lane chaos at the station/Asda traffic lights) are hardly the cause of congestion! "

Trouble is at rush hour it is more than just a 'few' that are not avoiding the traffic lights pinch point grand prix to cut in to the left but are deliberately intent on jumping the queue patiently waiting in the nearside lane which creates a constant stream of traffic circumnavigating the roundabout preventing anyone else joining!

So yes, they are responsible for the congestion!

As to the legality, apparently the Road Traffic Act 1988 section 3 has an offence of "driving without reasonable consideration". Cases include keeping headlights undimmed, flashing of lights, driving through puddles at speed, MISUSE OF LANES IN QUEUE JUMPING, unnecessarily slow driving and many others no doubt if you are witnessed doing it.

This is why on the rare occasions when a police car parks at the roundabout no one tries it on!

Don't forget to read up your new Highway Code which, from tomorrow, introduces new legislation but the government have decided they can do without appropriate publicity and millions of road users will just be aware of the additional rules regarding traffic hierachy!

Another plan, long lost in that long grass(reeds) was to have a link road from lawn avenue, across the Bure and onto the Runham roundabout. A study of traffic movements revealed that the volume of traffic coming from the North villages going to the industrial areas of Gapton Hall were causing a problem at both roundabouts. The new third river crossing may possibly change that factor. In any event the Acle Straight itself remains a dangerous road.

There could be some improvement when the new river crossing now under construction is open as it will reduce the number of HGVs having to go past the Rail Station
The Runham Roundabout up upgrade was delayed awaiting re modelling following its approval.
