It's a bit late in the season to promote an area, but for the winter boaters I thought an update might be in order. The Spar - It's closing mid October. There was a good piece in the EDP today (online) 25/9. Hopefully it will re-open, but it's a great loss if you're on a boat, or elderly, or don't drive..... The Red Herring - Closed. It's now Marmaris, a Turkish restaurant that was in the old winelodge location. I've not eaten there, nut heard good things. The Mermaid Fish & Chips, next to the Spar has thankfully closed. It's now been re-opened as Fast Foodies, a chippie and a lot more. I can honestly say that they do the best battered fish I have had in many years. The Waveney is a sports bar. Food is OK, take it for what it is. Flames fast food. Currently I would only eat there if I was so bunged up that I needed the sluices opened at both ends. The Wherry still does their carvery fare. It is what it is, you get what you pay for, just don't expect happy smiling staff. There are other changes coming. There are a one or two other places that might not make it through the winter. The spar closing is a major blow for boaters, but Asda will deliver to the Yacht Atation

We ate at the Marmaris, a couple of Saturdays ago and while I wouldn't rave about it (I'd never rave about any Turkish food) it was all in all not bad. First of all there is a free mixed salad and dips and pitta bread on the table, we had starters of Garlic Prawns and Haloumi cheese. For the main course we had the Lydias mixed special, which was Chicken and Lamb Shish, Chicken and Lamb Kofte and chickend wings on a bed of rice with chilies and salad. There was so much there we couldn't eat it all but they offered to box it up for us to take home, we shared a Baclava for sweet with 2 double Turkish coffees. The whole lot came to £55 so overall it was great value for money, if you like that sort of thing. The Waveney, I agree with Richards comments but would say their Breakfast is fantastic and great value whether you have the large or standard. Best breakfast Ive had for ages. The other food is average psuedo Yankie fayre. Dave if it is to be it is up to me.

Hi Steve, I live in South Oulton Broad, and have not seen the Tesco Metro. Whereabouts is it please? It would be really useful. Many thanks.

Thanks. Oh yes, I know that one - it is part of the petrol station. Thanks for the info.

That Tesco looks to be quite a walk from the YS, how long would it take roughly at a reasonable pace?

This pretty much settles it for me then. Down on the Broads the last week of the season and I was already debating do I do Oulton this time or not, following a pretty dismal visit at Easter. Might as well give it a miss I think.
