A quick note to introduce you to our new website, which I hope will be of interest to all who enjoy Hickling Broad and its village.

"Voices of Hickling" is a project to record memories of life in Hickling of as many of the older villagers who were born and bred in the village and those who have lived there most of their lives as we can.  To date we have recorded about 18 "Voices" who have given generously of their time to talk about life in the village in the middle years of the last century.

Our oldest "Voice" has just turned 100, and the youngest was born in 1945.

At least as many more will be recorded in the next year or so, and the site will continue to grow...

To date there are about 350 memories on the website in the form of audio clips, arranged so that you can access them by Topic or by "Voice".  So far there are 16 topic headings which include early life, the Broad and marsh, schooldays, farming, sports and pastimes, work, wartime and much more.

If you enjoy this corner of the Broads and the Broad Norfolk accent of most of the "Voices", please enjoy drifting round the site - www.voicesofhickling.co.uk - which is growing all the time.  Two more "Voices" have recently been recorded and their memories are mainly about sailing.  I hope we can start to get these up before too long...

There will also be a link from this site in due course.

Martin

What a nice website, and so nice to hear from real Norfolk people.  Although visited Hickling broad many times by boat, have never walked very far to see the rest of the village. I dont suppose there are so many shops now, if any?  During the late 1950s early 1960s on Holliday with family, we always used to visit the 'Heath Stores' and the owner was a very jolly chap, wearing a 'Sheriffs' badge, we always referred to him as The Sheriff of Hickling.  On our next visit will have a walk.
