With 12,181 registered members there is only one topic this evening. One!
This was such a vibrant forum. Don't tell me is is normal for this time of the year. Where has the interest gone, and why?

I'm here lurking in the background, no point me bothering with the 'other' forum as it seems I'm banned for daring to take the pee out of myself....

Dilligaf. Nothing to do with a any other forum
Steve. Nothing to do with the time of year. Where are all the Christmas greetings to the members. The holiday tales, the banter, the discussions of substance. I was a member of this forum many years ago. 2004 to be exact. Why has it changed.

This is a subject that crops up most years, round about this time.

The number of registered members (12,181) is simply that. The number of people who have registered (some more than once!) with the forum, since it began in 2004. As with any forum, members drift away, for a variety of reasons.

The number of active members on any forum is usually quite a small percentage of that forum. Even the more popular Broads Facebook groups, while apparently having many, many, members, have few regular contributors.

Another point to note is that this is a forum about the Norfolk Broads. This is a quiet time of year on the Broads and for the Broads Authority, so there tends to be little to discuss. It is very noticeably that other places, purporting to be Broads related, tend to spend a lot of time discussing anything BUT the Broads.

While there may not be many active discussions at the moment, you only have to look at the number of views that our topics get. There is still a considerable amount of interest in what our members have to say. It is a fact that many of those who have left in high dudgeon, and members who, for whatever reason, no longer post, still take a keen interest.

Finally, a discussion forum relies on its members raising topics to discuss. Some raise more than others.

I suspect Paladine that you are endeavouring to engender a degree of enthusiasm for an esprit de corps which no longer exists. My question remains the same. Why?
The forum needs to reflect.

flonker, I was simply trying to give my honest opinion in response to your questions. At the end of the day, the success of any discussion group relies on the willingness of its members to put up interesting subjects for discussion. In my opinion, anyone signing up for a discussion forum should be prepared to actively participate. On this forum (as with other forums) we have a number of members who simply read the posts, don't enter into discussions and don't start threads.

I view an esprit de corps to be  a somewhat negative influence on a discussion forum. As I have witnessed elsewhere, such an ethos tends to stifle vigorous debate, as it is seen to be against the perception of 'friendliness'. Quite frankly, I don't join a forum to make friends, but to learn through discussion and, hopefully, share my knowledge and experience of whatever subject is under discussion.

Hey flonker I'm on every night for a look, in case you missed it there was a big bang a few years ago and a number of members left,, having said that there has always been a quieter period during the colder months,

I wonder how long it will be before a Merry Christmas thread appears  Smile
