Hello all, after seeing it on one of the Captains Blog's I have always thought I'll have a mooch into there one day, but as it involves straying outside the channel markers on Barton Broad I have never plucked up the courage. As we will be down for a week on Swan Roamer in May I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge or experience of Wood End Staithe.

Thanks.
Phil.

When the Clearwater project took place at Barton in the early 2000's, they just left the channel markers for decoration I think, although it can still be a bit shallow outside them up towards Neatishead and more especially in the area of the southern part where the signs are.

Elsewhere you will be fine

Those channel markers were really useful in the thick fog a couple of weeks ago!

***This only applies to Barton Broad***

In the main part of the broad, there is ample depth outside the marked channel for the majority of motor boats (yachts with a deep keel may experience problem in places). The shallow areas are clearly marked and should be avoided.

When entering and navigating the dyke to Woodend staithe, try to keep to the middle of the channel, as it can get a bit shallow towards the sides and there may be tree roots.

Similarly, when turning in the basin at the staithe, be aware of tree roots and don't reverse too close to the bank. If in doubt, it is very easy to turn using ropes.

The staithe is the grassy bit on the right, the moorings dead ahead and in the branch to the left are private.

If you fancy a walk, it is about 30 minutes (or so) into Catfield and the Crown PH and Post Office Stores (but a torch is essential, if you stay out late!)

"..for the avoidance of any doubt, the broads are not legally a national park and do not come under the national park legislation, and nor will they."

Thanks for the replies and armed with all this information I will definitely check it out when we are down on the Broads in May.

Thanks.
Phil.
