Hi colingy I think your experience opens a whole new issue. My understanding is that the speed limits are arbitrary but are mainly to reduce wash and backside erosion. As some boats create more wash at 3 mph than others do at 10 mph I can easily imagine a scenario where a ranger asks you to slow down ( in effect cut your wash ) even when you are within the speed limit. It has certainly happened to me on a laden mayland 16 on the bure. This has a semi planing hull and can create a disproportionate wash. It has never happened to me steering a river boat. I can't explain the speed gun though that seems a bit odd. Also I don't know your hull type but I put my theory down as a possibility. Graham

I saw the Really Ranger using the radar gun in the same place several weeks ago. I was doing dead on 4mph, had it pointed at me, but no waving! I slowed down and had a quick chat. It's their new toy. Battery operated, it doesn't need an umbilical power cord attached to the patrol launch, so we can expect it to be used with the launch tucked out of sight!!! Of course, that will be of no consequence to those of us who stick to the speed limits

I have an old Tom Tom sat nav and it works fine and very accurate. I also think that due to the narrowness of the river through Irstead that the speed limit should be 3mph as it is at Belaugh. The river is no wider at Irstead than Belaugh so why not the same speed limit?
When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever is left no matter how improbable, must be the truth. avg45

With no flow on the river and our hull design (Bermuda) there was no sign of wash at all Colingy

I have a chart plotter on board so no problem for me but on my android phone (old galaxy ace) I have a free app called MMtracker which will use the memorymap os 1:25,000 broads map to show my location as well as being able to show speed and position in various formats, the mapping came from a one eyed chap with a wooden leg from the coast of somalia, had a lovely parrot too....

LM: Sounds very much like the guy I got my OS maps from! I use mine with Alpine Quest but once I have some more suitable maps or aerial photos I may well switch over to Androzic. Andy

Try this free app. Mad Mutt Marine. Put together by an amateur sailor on the South Coast. Gives you all the data you might reasonably need. Works on proper boats too!
