Hi everyone, I am a newcomer to the Forum so here goes. Does anyone know of a reasonably priced GPS boat speedometer. I have scrolled through the internet and the only ones I can find are very complicated with features I just don't need and a bank-busting price tag. I just need a simple device to give an accurate speed indication up to 10mph. Many thanks and happy boating.
John.

Wilfred hi, I can't talk from experience but I wonder if one of these cycle speedometers will do the job. Try clicking here SORRY. INVESTIGATED FURTHER AND WILL BE NO GOOD AS DOESN'T WORK BY SATELLITE. I don't know but if you have a smart phone I wonder if you can get a suitable apps. There will be other forum members far better qualified to answer this question than me. Kind Regards Alan... www.mynorfolkbroadsboating.co.uk/

Hi Wilfred, As boat-mad has said, if you have a smart phone then the "Boatie" app has a GPS driven speed indicator - I have it on an iphone, don't know if it's available for other devices, but something will be I'm sure.

I have used both Cycledroid and Move-bike computer apps on my phone to measure boat speed. Both free downloads from Play Store. Both also work on the bike!! Phil

John, we use a Garmin eTrex and it does the job perfectly without the need to sell a kidney. A brief scan of eBay shows that they can be obtained brand new for around £60. You may actually drop on a second-hand one for much less. Good hunting.

Have a look at this:- GPS I use one of these and they are great. They 'draw' a track of where you've been and you can add named waypoints as you go for later reference. Speed can be set in Knots or Mph. All the info is saved even when you disconnect it. You don't need an antenna if you have clear upward 'vision' as the unit does have a built in one anyway. I just plug mine into the cigarette socket and off we go. The older I get... The better I was....!!

For Android an app called Sail Droid gives GPS speed and compass heading in an easy uncluttered display. I also use GPS Essentials. This has a dashboard which can display all sorts of information including speed. Both good apps (IMO).
