Dear all forum members

I am disabled with only one hand (but very confident in ability) my wife and I have hired a boat for a week on the broads in September, the boat we have hired is top gem a forty foot cruiser, having not driven a boat for thirty years plus I have a little trepidation, have any other disabled people been on the broads just lately and if so any advise would be great.also advise from any able bodied person would be helpful.

Regards

Mark and Sharon (oillie) pug dog

Mark & sharon hi and welcome to the forum

I myself am disabled and am an all to frequent broads
boater and I confess ive never experienced any
difficulties. In the whole other broads users are
extremely helpful and quickly offer help. You do
experience the odd pockets of arrogance but its not all
to frequent.

I love my time afloat a good crew and a sensible approach
has for me always led to a successful,  relaxing and
enjoyable holiday.

Bob

Hello Mark

I probably am unable to offer much help, save to suggest that if you will be piloting the craft, while your better half on the ropes, you might want one of those devices that can be clamped to the wheel to assist is rapid rudder movement.

Other than that - have a lovely time!

Stuart

Hi bob and Stuart

Thank you for your help and advise, I have found that there are certain people in life who will look at the cover and judge rather than ask a question, my question for Stuart is the rapid rudder assit? Can this be pre booked from the boat yard.

Regards

Mark

I think SGWilko had this sort of thing in mind.

There was one fitted to the first boat I ever bought and it was quite useful.

Gosh - you got me there!

I don't know!

However, this link to a popular auction site; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/181329114973?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108 can give you a head start by getting on of your own to use again and again.

I am conscious however that I may be guilty of teaching you to suck eggs!

Stuart.

EDIT to say Paladine has beaten me to it, thank you! Smile

Thanks all

I have seen these type of devices in the past, I am not too concerned about turning the wheel quickly, I have delve loped a very strong left arm over the years and can drive 40 foot articulated with ease even the older ones without power steering

The only other consideration perhaps, would be a conversation with your boatyard of choice, to find a boat that has controls (wheel and throttle/gear lever position) that best suits your circumstances - left or right.

Without wishing to come across as rude or presumptuous, you probably have two fully functioning arms, just with one hand, so you will likely manage the throttle with the 'other' arm, if you get what I mean!

Stuart.

Thank you for all your wonderful advice, it's much appreciated, the only concern I have is that it is only going two of us and the wife is very much a novice, although I am not an expert by any means having only taken one boat on the broads thirty years ago, it's the mooring of such a large vessel that concerns me, the wife is concerned whether she will be of any help .
