Captains Blog

Is a thread that most of us are well familiar with by now. Created, filmed / screened /edited by our very own 'LondonRascal' or Robin to most of us.

Robin as some of you are aware has got ambitions to become a boat owner anytime soon (make that anytime) but it is unlikely to happen before the salty trip.  I'd very much like him to film and record the event.
Robin would very much like to do the same

Problem - 'B.A' is fully crewed and he needs room (not a lot) and a high vantage point to do his stuff.

Therefore going on the old saying of  -  'You never get if you never ask'  -  I'm asking on his behalf.  He is far to reserved and polite to ask himself whereas I'm very opposite and more in your dish and doing the straight Yorkshire speak thing.

Please would any skipper (Salty side) that has room in/on his/her wheelhouse for Robin to be onboard for the day to do his thing?

Accommodation is not an issue as Robin will book himself into a hotel for the Saturday evening at Oulton Broad (But if anyone has a spare berth for his svelte frame for the Saturday night - even better)

I'd be proper miffed if someone during or after the event said 'If only you had asked me Griff'

Assuming someone steps up to the plate, the logistics can be worked out before the day.

Thanking one and all in advance,

Griff

Thank you Griff for posting this Smile

For anyone thinking about accommodating me on the day I am well trained and bring little with me and have my own life jacket. If you personally did not wish to be on camera that would be fine too - the boat would be effectively a ‘floating tripod’ to get footage of the event from.

Thanks Sanderling - very good of you.

I had only the one request for a passenger - Robin as previously mentioned.

However there may well be another one/two forumites out there that may wish to take you up on your kind offer.

Robin

You are welcome aboard Secret Lady as a back up if needed. The flybridge provides a good vantage point but I can't guarantee it'll be stable!

Cheers

Bridge Lifts

Griff has asked me to liase with Yarmouth Port Control regarding the booking of the bridge lifts for the exit to sea.

As high water is at 09:40 on 12th July at Gorleston, I would suggest we probably need to be exiting through Haven bridge at about 09:00. The water can run very very fast where it is squeezed through the bridge with some big eddys, so getting through at slack-ish water will be easiest for those with lower powered engines rather than trying to fight the 5-6 knot current that can sometimes occur there.

I have spoken to Bridge Operations already, just to ask if there are any issues with a large number of craft passing through in one go. I have been told it isn't a problem (other than the natives getting a little restless).

Normally the lifts at Breydon bridge and Haven bridge are synchronised such that Haven is lifted 5 minutes or so after Breydon (outbound) to allow vessels to transit Breydon and congregate near Haven. This obviously means holding station against the tide for a short while. There is plenty of room for this between the bridges.

It may be possible for some of the lower air-draft vessels to pass through one or both Bridges without waiting for the lift. This is perfectly acceptable and may ease any congestion. The published clearance heights for the bridges at average high water are 13' for the fixed span at Breydon (11'6" for the lifting span) and 9'6" for Haven. To this end, I would be grateful if all participants would PM me with the air-drafts of their vessels in order for me to be able to have a better idea of how many boats may get through without requiring the lift.

Cheers

Mark

Finally I have the list of those who will be allocated places on the MTB and Humber sea trip. Sorry it's a little later than originally promised

Outbound from Lowestoft

MTB
Readyabout x 2 people
Silver Gem x 2 people
Spelelogist x 2 people

Humber
Fidear45 x 3 people
Tricxy x 2 people
Sternmoor x 1 person

Returning from Great Yarmouth

All parties will transfer from their outward bound vessel to the other boat for their return run, thus giving everyone a chance to take lots of snaps of both boats and be able to say "I went on both of these!"

Thank you to all participants who have agreed to pay MTB trust £25 per person for a contribution to the cost their trip. This should be paid to Richard Basey before departure from Lowestoft please!

I would hope that you will feel able to make a further contribution to their ongoing challenge of maintaining these boats for the future heritage. There is no doubt you will have a memorable trip :e.g.:

There is a waiting list started, so please PM me if you cannot participate and I can pass your place on.

Simon
