Robin,
Just watched the C-in-C blog. Great pity that the day couldn't go ahead as planned, but a fantastic recovery by all concerned. Well done!!!

best regards,
Eric

Update -  (This post is aimed at the skippers / crews of those that assembled for the salty bottom cruise on 12th July this year)

Since the failed sea trip I have been in communications with Sentinel Leisure Trust on trying to get honest detailed answers on what went wrong and why.

I have promised SLT that I would not broadcast their findings on any forum (Not that they requested me not too).

Sadly or to put it better - very frustratingly, both myself and SLT have now exhausted any further progress in this matter and any further communications between myself and SLT is pointless

SLT did issue a full and frank written apology which I passed onto the salty skippers as soon as I had received it.  I put together a dossier with witness statements for SLT to look into with a promise from them that they would do an internal inquiry and get back to me with their findings - this has not happened and if SLT get their way - won't do so either.

So I have ramped it up a notch and am now dealing with another authority on the matter, this is presently ongoing.

The only 'new' bit of news I can offer is that I now have it in writing that Mutford Lock was indeed re-opened Saturday morning to all craft EXCEPT our salty bottoms flotilla - this of course is not real news as we knew that ourselves from the Saturday lunchtime onwards - but at least I now have written confirmation of this. I'm happy to go public with that one as it did not come from SLT so I'm not breaking a promise

Skippers / Crew - I'm still on the case and won't let it drop until I get real, honest and frank answers to the points I have raised, I'm doing my best but as seems to be the norm wheels of large authorities turn frustratingly slowly.  If you require more in depth details then please send me your name, boat name and e-mail address to my e-mail:- griff15@btinternet.com

Mods - seeing as my e-mail address is out there in many public places I'm happy for it to to be available for all if you are - Tks

Your Humble Servant,

Griff

I haven't previously posted on this thread, as I was not involved with the intended C-I-C, but now it has been revived, I'm rather curious.

After the July difficulties, this was posted about Sentinel: "I have accepted their apology in full and in the spirit it is intended.  I hope you other skippers and crew can do the same and we can move on."

Obviously, the moving on hasn't happened. As I understand it, Mutford Lock is run by a private limited company. So, unless they are somehow in breach of contract or have offended against some maritime law (both of which are actionable), and having totally apologised, it is unclear to me what is now expected of them. They are hardly likely to volunteer information which could be used against them in litigation.

At least, this thread is open to public view.

Paladine:

You quoted from the letter that Rob Johnson Head of Operations at Sentinel sent to Griff and that Griff had posted on this thread at page 26.  I will now quote from the same letter but from the lat paragraph thereof:

“I will be conducting a full investigation into this matter and will take the appropriate course of action.”

As per Griff’s post above he states:

“... I put together a dossier with witness statements for SLT to look into with a promise from them that they would do an internal inquiry and get back to me with their findings - this has not happened and if SLT get their way - won't do so either.”

So you see whilst an apology was given, and accepted - Sentinel have not carried out any investigation into the matter and neither has any action been taken which is precisely what Mr Johnson had said would happen.

As a result, there remain a lot of points that need to be gotten to the bottom of and it is for these reasons I think Griff is having to take matters further with another authority to perhaps exert some pressure upon Sentinel to investigate or indeed for the other authority to investigate themselves.

It may not be following a prescribed manner, but sometimes one has to do all they can at times of frustration and 'ruffle feathers' to get to the bottom of matters.

Either way, somebody needs to do investigate matters and then to respond to Griff with their findings.

Until that has happens, or there is further updates from Griff, perhaps it is best everyone sits back now and waits to see what transpires.

londonrascal, I don't see how you can say "...Sentinel have not carried out any investigation into the matter and neither has any action been taken which is precisely what Mr Johnson had said would happen." All you, or any of us, know at this stage is that, if an enquiry has taken place and action taken, that information has not been passed on.

We are not talking about a public authority here, with established complaints procedures and an external regulatory body who can hold them to task. It's a private limited company. I don't have sufficient information to comment about the events leading to the updating post, but I am still wondering what grounds there are to demand any detailed explanation of their internal operations.

No one demanded that SLT carry out any sort of investigation let alone an internal one.

It was indeed SLT that volunteered direct to me that this would happen and that they would get to the bottom of the matter and let me know their findings

I spent a lot of time putting together a dossier, witness statements, and 12 main questions (Now 13) that I wanted answers to.  I was assured (In writing) that this would happen.

They have now reneged on this promise

My personal opinion is that they did indeed carry out and internal inquiry and did not like what they discovered and now find it too embarrassing to forward it on so I and the skippers / crews can be informed

Griff

Graeme, Sentinel Leisure Trust is, indeed, a charity which operates services on behalf of Waveney District Council, but Mutford Lock is operated by Sentinel Enterprises Limited, which is a trading subsidiary of the Trust.
