Sentinel's response will be interesting. From this end of the Broad it does seem that the harbour master has taken it on himself to decide who may and who may not use the Lock. The fact is that other boats were able to use the Lock.

Again I can't jump the gun here but hope to have news very shortly.  I have already had the business development manager and the assistant chief executive offering their full and unreserved apologies via the phone. More to follow.  The wheels whilst not spinning are turning.

A big big thank you to Sentinel Leisure for going above and beyond to help Richard and The Forum . At such a tragic time The Sentinel Team did a sterling job of Holding the 'Respect for the deceased'  dealing with the official matters over the tragic incident and then offering and helping The Forum relocate so the event could happen at a more appropriate venue .
Ladies and Gentlemen of Sentinel :            You are true professionals.  Thank you
Maggie and Steve.

Edited for typos.

Having read that Sentinel did go out of thier way to help relocate plans for the weekend I think that is highly commendable.

However, i do wonder why the decision to close OB was taken.  It does go without saying that it was a terrible, tragic and unfortunate accident but waving the mooring revenue for the period closed and interfering with the weekends plans for what must be a lot of folk and ruining the sea trip, running the lock when it had been advertised as closed.  I think it was all a bit OTT to be honest!

Had investigation been ongoing and the yacht station remaining cordened off for the weekend then fair enough but it all seemed clear by friday evening so I dont really understand the motive.  Someone must have thought they were doing the right thing but Im not sure I agree.

Sounds like they did indeed do a wonderful relocation from the yacht
station at very short notice, all credit to them, and yes,  a mark of
respect to be fully supported; as Griff and others have said.

The opening of the lock after closing is a separate issue and Griff is
dealing with it separately as far as I can tell. Certainly not a good
idea to have a 'trial by forum' on it!

Best wishes,

Pauline

As I have said elsewhere the welcome and help received at Beccles was second to none. All praise to the good folk at Beccles.

I agree that this should not be a trial by forum but questions are begging to be asked and that is just what Griff is doing.

This has NOTHING to do with shifting venues from OBYS to Beccles - that went very smoothly due to all parties pulling together and getting it sorted at very short unplanned notice.  I am grateful to Sentinel for pulling out the stops and also giving us free berths (They didn't need to do that really).  It seemed all of us Skippers and crew were quite happy to move venues given the circumstances unfolding on the Friday at OBYS and none of us, certainly not I have any complaints there.

Where it started to unfold was the option of Mutford Lock being denied to us from first thing Saturday morning.  I'm sure by now all the skippers/crews there on the day are aware of our grievances and raised some valid points, I have discussed these at length with those at Sentinel, and would hope there is no need to publish those bullet points or the replies on here.

After quite a few phone calls with the staff at Sentinel (And no doubt more to come) I can shed a bit of light on the subject as to why the option of Mutford Lock was denied us.  Basically for various reasons that I won't go into on here they were understaffed to cope with our numbers, plus internal communications broke down prior to the event.  As thing unfolded procedures were not followed correctly, some thing were said that should not have been and some things could have been done a whole lot better

They are aware of this.  I have accepted their apology in full and in the spirit it is intended.  I hope you other skippers and crew can do the same and we can move on.  If you have any further specific questions, please do not hesitate to E-mail me.  One other point Suffolk County Council did NOT instruct the lock to be closed - it's not their remit.  The lock was NEVER closed on Saturday at all. (This from the ops manager)

Herewith as received from Sentinel:-

------------------------------------

Dear Mr Griffin

RE:  Oulton Broad Yacht Station

We would like to formally apologise to you and your party members for the fact that Sentinel have not delivered the services to the standard that we should be delivering to you and your party. As mentioned yesterday we would like to continue working with you in the future and Chris and I would be happy to meet/discuss next year’s event at the appropriate time to guarantee its success.

I will be conducting a full investigation into this matter and will take the appropriate course of action.

Now can we get back to photo's and the like being posted up, surely someone has a few from the MTB102 and Humber sea trip?  -  From what I hear the sea conditions were ideal and paddle boarders could have made the journey on the day, let alone our motley flotilla of river boats and dedicated sea craft.
