I spent Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning at Oulton broad as we were meeting family there who had caught the train to spend the evening with us and both the lock and bridge were in full operation.
Having to spend ten minutes waiting at the footbridge for boats to come through I was less than amused I can tell you.
I can well understand that holding a BBQ party in the Yacht station would have been out of the question considering but they could have let us through the lock to then travel on to Beccles.

i am sure the truth about the locks will come to light soon, and Griff will post the reason the company said it was shut. At the moment it looks like a cock up on one of the employees of thd company who run it. That said, a great day had by all, and beccles  was a great venue.

Not quite the day we expected, but it all came good in the end. Lovely weather, and a relaxed and friendly evening. I gather there were a few sore heads on Sunday! We were sitting behind Richard's barbecue, and we saw the sheer hard work involved, on a steamy afternoon. A lovely feast, and gratefully received all round. Thanks to Richard and his able assistants. Thanks to Rebecca for the music, too. And thanks, Griff, for all your efforts in arranging the salty side of things. That it didn't happen was just bad luck, which couldn't have been foreseen in anyone's wildest imagination. All in all, a good day.

Regards, Ray.

Yes, I was very surprised to see the lock in full swing just after lunchtime on Saturday. Three sailing cruisers locked through to Lake Lothing in the few minutes that I was watching the webcam.

Bad luck indeed, the mild weather window for just those few hours was perfect, with a much more lumpy sea just before and after.

Some boats were allowed to use the Lock whilst others were not. Am looking forward to Griff's report!

Yes, it was great week-end, Beccles came up trumps, wonderful venue for a meet.

More information on THAT would be interesting!

i think the whole thing went rather well.as griff and i were burning up are phone time to find an alternate location the staff at obys managed to sort out the beccles venue which was much better.

As the information about the drowning, and the number of bodies that could have been involved the council made a very wise decision to close the lock, rather than a bunch of boats turn up in lake loating and be stuck there.

As it was one one boat had not heard about the change of plan, so a member of staff had to be taken from beccles to help with the lock thru, in the morning they were lucky to have a ba ranger to help.

So i think praise should be given. It's a shame that the salt side trip had to be cancelled, but i cant see that a trip like that is more important than a death.

And we all had a good cruise and party, wasn't that what it was all about??

Early on in this thread there was talk with regards making this forum
look bad should a bad situation arise - well it did but not towards the
forum and those taking part . I don't know the full story yet but well
done to those taking part who changed there plans out of Respect

More of a credit to the forum me thinks

Back Home now,

Not seen any post till now and I'm away early in the morning for work.

Well what happened with the lock? - As soon the upper echelons at Sentinal Leisure and myself have finished with our discussions and I have permission from Sentinal - all will become clear.  Can't say too much at present as I don't want to embarrass anyone.

The change of venue went very smoothly, Richard and moi discussed this on the Friday afternoon and Saturday forenoon as and when we could - considering the situation was with no notice - I think all parties did very well at the short notice we had.

And we need to remember in amongst all this a life was sadly lost.
