Finally I have the list of those who will be allocated places on the MTB and Humber sea trip. Sorry it's a little later than originally promised

Outbound from Lowestoft

MTB
Readyabout x 2 people
Silver Gem x 2 people
Spelelogist x 2 people

Humber
Fidear45 x 3 people
Tricxy x 2 people
Sternmoor x 1 person

Returning from Great Yarmouth

All parties will transfer from their outward bound vessel to the other boat for their return run, thus giving everyone a chance to take lots of snaps of both boats and be able to say "I went on both of these!"

Thank you to all participants who have agreed to pay MTB trust £25 per person for a contribution to the cost their trip. This should be paid to Richard Basey before departure from Lowestoft please!

I would hope that you will feel able to make a further contribution to their ongoing challenge of maintaining these boats for the future heritage. There is no doubt you will have a memorable trip :e.g.:

There is a waiting list started, so please PM me if you cannot participate and I can pass your place on.

Simon

Bridge Lifts

Thank you to those of you who have sent me your air-drafts so far.

One comment that has popped up from a couple of people is that whilst they can fold bits down to get a lower draft, they would prefer to leave them up and go through with the lift (which will be required for some boats anyway). I'd just like reassure you this is not a problem at all.

Something that might be worth considering though, is lowering bits at the other end. The lifts for Bascule bridge in Lowestoft occur at set times during the day, and are not booked specifically for certain vessels like Yarmouth is. With this in mind, there will be around 19 of our boats, but could potentially be other vessels not connected with the C-in-C and this is a large number of boats to hang around in the outer harbour and bridge channel.

I have spoken the Lowestoft Harbour, and they are happy for vessels to pass under the bridge if they are able without a lift, with prior permission by VHF or mobile. The clearance under the bridge will have to be ascertained on the day, but ranges from around 7' to 10' depending on tide.

Lower vessels being able to get a head start up Lake Lothing would also help ease the congestion at Mutford Lock, where space to hold station is severely limited.

Cheers

Mark

More news,

NavPlan:-

I have finally found time and also manage to converse with Richard Bassey (Skipper MTB and Humber)

All sailors will know the tides have a huge influence on passage planning.  Added to that in our case are bridges both at Yarmouth and Lowestoft.

Yarmouth as Mbird has informed is is not such a problem as lifts can be pre-booked.  At Lowestoft the Harbour bridge (Bascule) has set lifting times.

So the early stages of the NavPlan are primarily governed by the bridge at Lowestoft, both for the heritage craft exiting and all of us entering. (Well those that need a lift)

MTB102 and Humber will rendezvous with our flotilla off Gt Yarmouth at midday - 1200.

Therefore we need to sort out timing departing Berney Arms to arrive outside the piers no later than 1145.  We can of course arrive earlier at the rv point and just amuse ourselves accordingly

The flotilla will enter Lowestoft outer harbour for a bridge lift at 1430.

We have effectively a 2Hr 15m sea trip 1200 - 1415 out at sea.  The distance from the piers at GYA to Lowestoft is a shade under 10 miles.  So an average speed over ground of 4:5mph will do it

BUT we will have tide against us.  I will promulgate exactly how much tide and speed on another post later on, but assuming your vessel can make a minimum of 6mph through the water you will be fine.

Passenger timings and more details for MTB102 and Humber for both legs of the sea trip - Mirage will post these up shortly.

--------------

Any thoughts on the above?  If any - Lets get them discussed and then I'll amend the first post accordingly of this thread

That will mean a bridge lift at Yarmouth at around 11:00, well into the flood tide. My main concern will be any boats with low powered engines being able to punch the tide coming through the bridge, but I don't know enough about the boats attending to be able to tell if it's an issue or not. I would suggest that anything with a small engine like a BMC 1.5 could find it a slog to get through Haven bridge.

Cheers

I would be a bit wary of taking Moonlight Shadow on to the sea even though I would love to do it, because of lack of power, the top speed we have achieved is 9.2mph on Breydon and it is a large cruiser.

Well I can't do much about the tide times with relations to bridge lifting times at Lowestoft - come to think - I can't do owt about them  Frown

Hopefully I will find time this weekend to study the tidal flows and report accordingly

Btw - 'B.A' is absolutely flat out at around 10mph and I don't run her at that speed much if at all unless I really have to - but had to for about 2 x Hrs on our way south approaching south dock marina on the Thames  - bit touch and go was that one   Gasp

Sorry Griff, I've been an idiot. We will be going through Haven bridge with the ebb tide, not punching the flood as I had thought! Doh!

The tidal flows once at sea will be around 1-2 knots which we will be punching, but I don't think that will be worrying anyone!

I take your point Griff, but my seamanship skills wouldn't even register against yours. Smile
