Done as requested.

-------------------------

I now have the laptop in my possession with our electronic navigation charts therein.  Therefore this week all I need is one evening un-interupted, I'll get the electronics fired up and the paper charts out and finalise the Navplan together with those all important tidal streams, tide heights etc.

Hello to all.

I am new to the forum (and relatively speaking, to the Broads as well). I have recently signed up for the Salty Bottoms trip. Griff very kindly spoke with me over the weekend and suggested that I put a few notes on the forum for advice etc from other participants.

- My boat is called Mouche and is a 27' traditional scottish fishing boat

- She is a sea boat, but we can only manage about 4-5 knots, but have a new engine (35hp) and a good screw

- We are planning to get to Berney Arms late afternoon/early evening on Friday 11th, leaving Reedham at about 4pm or so

- As we will be punching tide on Sat morning across Breydon Water, we believe we will need to leave Berney Arms by about 9:30AM on Sat morning for an 11am bridge opening. We are 9'-6' air draft so I think we will need the lift at HW ?

- HW at Haven is at about 10:30am as I understand it (1 hr after Gorleston)

- The distance from Haven to the GY piers down the Yare is approx 3 miles (as I understand it), so with tide, I guess it will take me about 1/2hr - 3/4 hr ?

- The tidal stream between Lowestoft and GY (if I am reading it correctly) is about 2 kts (its springs), so we will make about 2-3 kts over the ground.

- On that basis, assuming we leave GY at around 11:45 - 12 noon, we will get to Lowestoft by about 15:45 - 16:00, assuming no adverse weather.

- Low water is at about 16:35 at Lowestoft on Sat 12th I think ?

- The last bridge lift in Lowestoft is 4pm I believe, so it might be a bit nip and tuck for us. The bugout is to go into the RNSYC visitors berth and overnight there. This would mean going through the bridge and Mutford Lock on Sunday morning rather than Sat pm.

- All of the above makes us 'the slow boat' I think, so if there are any others in the same position it would be good to link up if possible

- Views and comments/corrections to the above would be very welcome

Best wishes

Peter S

Hi Peter

I believe you are the boat moored almost opposite us in Reedham Marina? We are "Secret Lady", one of the Sealine 350 flybridges.

I would think your timings are about right. You will not need Breydon bridge lifted (though it will be lifting anyway for other boats) but will have to wait until the 11:00 lift at Haven bridge I would think, since we'll almost be on springs all bar 2 days.

Regarding the bridge lifts at Lowestoft, there are lifts after 16:00, at 18:00, 19:00, 21:00 and 24:00 at weekends. You won't get through Mutford lock much after 17:00 unless by special arrangement though. It's entirely possible you might get under Bascule Bridge without having a lift as it will be approaching low water at the time you arrive, so it's always worth a call to Lowestoft Harbour to ask how much clearance they have.

Cheers

Mark

Thanks Mark - yes we are opposite you at Reedham. Thanks for the info Re the Bascule Bridge. Looks like Mutford Lock will be the pinch point. I think I will book a mooring at RNSYC to be on the safe side, but with a following wind and a fair tide (literally) we might get up to Mutford by 5 I guess.
Thanks again
Yours

Hi Peter

RNSYC can be a bit reluctant to book visitor moorings, so it's usually a suck-it-and-see situation as to whether there is any space on their visitor pontoon on the day. However, don't forget there are also the two Haven marinas that will book you in. The outer one is in Hamilton Dock opposite RNSYC, and has good pontoons but a bit "industrial". The other Haven site is much nearer Oulton Broad (about 10 mins walk), and directly opposite is the Lowestoft Cruising Club who also welcome visitors.

I've marked up a Google map view of Lake Lothing so you can see where these are. The satellite view is obviously a bit out of date as it shows no pontoons in Hamilton dock, but rest assured they are there! Hope that helps Smile

Cheers

Mark

Thanks Mark - you are right - RNSYC would not allow a pre-booking so I have booked one at the Haven.

Thanks
