Hi all,

I am new to the forum and have a few questions...

I have been on two broads holidays before and am about to go on a stag do in just over a weeks time.

We have booked 2 boats from Richardsons in Stalham. Half of our group are going down on Friday morning to pick up the boats and the other half will be arriving at around half 8 on the Friday night.

My questions are:

Can anybody recommend anywhere nearby to Stalham that has a decent pub so that the second half of our group can meet up with those already on the boats? We will be driving down so ideally somewhere that is OK to park over night.

Secondly, can anyone give me a rough estimate of the time it takes to sail from Stalham to Horning? It's just to get an idea of what sort of distances we can cover and what sort of time it takes.

Any suggestions of good pubs and or interesting places to go would be much appreciated.

I know that others have posted this on here but we aren't a group of lager louts! We are a group in our 30's looking for a good weekend away to celebrate our good friend tying the knot.

Thanks in advance, J. Smile

Personally I would stay in Stalham otherwise you may find difficulty in finding car parking for the rest of your group, failing that Sutton Staithe has a nice pub and only a short sail from Stalham or Ludham Bridge about a hour and a bit from Stalham and the pub is a short walk from the moorings. Stalham to Horning a couple of hours.

Just a thought, if you are considering one boat
catching the other up rather than leaving a car parked
at a pub best remember that navigating the second boat
after dark is an offence. Really the first boat will
have to wait for the second boat at the yard. Don't
know Stalham's pubs so can't advise on that one, sorry.

Jenny Morgan,
A vane, a boat, but not a bird.

With kind permission, thank you:

I think that only crew/people will be catching up with the 2 boats picked up earlier in the afternoon.

So, nearest place would be Sutton  Staithe where there is a pub and moorings. I have never parked there as always gone by boat but sure they have a car park. However, if you want to leave the car(s) there for the weekend you should clear this with the pub who may make a small charge. By river it will take the boaters about 40 mins to get there. By car its just 5 mins or so from Stalham.

If the boaters have more time than this then they could head down The Ant to Ludham Bridge and then walk up the road to The Dog Inn - cant tell you anything about this place as not been there in recent years. They do have a car park and, again, may allow you to leave vehicles there subject to a small charge. Or you can walk further on and into Ludham to pay a visit to the Kings Arms whiich is a decent pub, again with parking. It will take about  90 mins by river from Stalham to get to Ludham Bridge or a couple of hours if you trundle.

Hope this helps, Karen

P.S. if you are heading for Horning ultimately then Ludham Bridge is a fair way along that journey - prob somewhere between and a third and half way there.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all of your replies, very helpful.

I am aware that you aren't supposed to sail after dark which is why we are looking for a general meeting place. The group that are going down in the morning will pick up both boats, take them for a bit of exploring and find somewhere suitable to moor up that the rest of us can get to and park up with 2 cars.

Thanks for the suggestions of pubs, I'll ring ahead to see how they feel about us parking over the weekend.

Thanks for the heads up on distances too, just gives me an idea of where we can go on Saturday.

One more question...

Does anybody know of any venues that have live music on Saturday nights?

Thanks again folks, J. Smile

Agree witht the comments regarding pubs.

Just one point about Richardson's - if you decide to stay there note that the gate is locked about 1800hrs so the late arrivals will not get into the carpark at Richo's unless they are lucky.

Richardsons will give you the code for the lock if you ask. Remember any crew joining you will need lifejackets so probably best to meet at Richardsons and get the extra crew fitted with Jackets.

Some of the best local musicians do a programmes of live music at varying pubs. When are you down exactly? is it the weekend before easter? 22/23/24 March? you may just be a tad too early...
