I’d like to introduce you to Norfolk Broads - Live! And some background on what this is.

For those of you who have been following the thread in which ‘Broad Ambition’ will - all things being well - attend the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant to mark the Queens Diamond Jubilee. It has been discussed the idea for the journey to be broadcast over the internet for all here (and wider afield) to watch.

So that is the background.

On Tuesday 14th February it won’t just be love that is being shared – for at around 12:00pm (though this is subject to confirmation and will be updated in this thread) there shall be a trial broadcast made from aboard a boat I am hiring for Valentines.

It will be simultaneously recorded for those who cannot make it and watch the live stream, but those of you who can watch you will be able to join in the chat room (I plan on having a poll perhaps with a vote on where to head to and what to see) so you will be able to truly interact in real time and influence things.  And talk to each other and me in real time to boot!

There will be at least 3 cameras, one complete with a pan and tilt 180degree view, one in the cockpit and one likely at the bow.  There will be internal and external sound (though this is subject to wind noise) and the whole shebang will be broadcast in real time and in high quality.

The serious side is to see if it actually works, how well it performs and how simple is to use.  The reason is because if and it is a big if (and has nothing to do with myself) but if those aboard Broad Ambition where to want to do such a broadcast and use this system the it needs to be pretty easy to use, simple to fix up and take away afterwards and not end up costing too much.

So you can all see how well this goes but should I crash and burn – well at least you can also see that as well.  No pressure then!

If it does go to plan, it will again be trialled in March and April with perhaps some further tweeks and improvements being made. Nothing quite like this has been done before to my knowledge so it will certainly be a new take on seeing the Norfolk Broads from afar.

This will also have updates to the Blog, and you are able to watch Inner Shed’s HD web cam at Barnes Brinkcraft here too.

Further announcements will be made as to specifically what time the broadcast will begin and for how long it will last. They will be all shown at www.norfolkbroadslive.com and I will also be producing a ‘set up’ behind the scenes video for Griff & Co. so they can see what goes into it and how such is used.  Also in ‘Holiday Tales’ the usual ‘All Aboard’ thread with a daily Captains Blog and write up of our adventures will be made. After all this, I plan to treat my girlfriend to the very thing she wants which is spending Valentines somewhere away from it all tucked up in a cosy boat, but as she said to me

“As long as you spoil me in the evening you can play with boats and cameras, but if not your be going for a swim...”

Looking forward to this LR although I will say you lost me when you got all technical and mentioned three cameras but you are in my favourites already.  Good luck with it.

What's the chassis number

Looks really exciting, Rascal.  We'll be watching.  Hope it all goes as well as you (no we all) would like. The Broads would be a cold swim in February!!

Thanks for the encouraging replies so far guys Smile

One thing I have already discovered trying out the rig today and news for anyone trying similar to this,  Active USB extension cables and webcams do not work.  At least with my set up.

So have ordered a couple of passive ones though they will have to be shorter (5 metres +Webcam cable length) as opposed to the 15 Metre active ones I had bought.

Oh, the difference between them is ‘active’ cables are they take power from the USB port to repeat the single along the cable length so you don’t loose data.  However data is buffered with this method (as the box stated) and of course a webcam can’t have data being buffered like perhaps a printer or memory stick could.

Passive are just plane old fashion extension cables, but really your limit with this is 5 metres and that is pushing things.  Although I have a one with gold plated connects that does work over 10 metres, I’d rather not risk finding it does not work when onboard a boat.

I am also looking at keep costs down.  Cheapest thing so far was the domain name £6.00 for a year!

Well in the coming weeks shall be updating things and come the day let’s see how it all goes.

You can extend USB with ethernet RJ45 adapters, up to 150ft.

Self powered too....

Like the Ether option but only usb1.1 - How about using a powered usb hub on the end of a usb extension? does that make the hub active? mean another 240v plug.

Very interesting, how will the signal be transmitted from the boat .?
Will you use 3G ie mobile phone link ?

The mobile network is poor over most of the Broads.

With reference to USB, you can only use that up to 5 metres.
The Ethernet option RJ45 as mentioned before will be your best bet, as you can easily do 50 metres.

Make sure your connections and adaptors are not subject to the weather.
As an option of using 230/240 volts, you can buy 12 volt to 5 volt adaptors, usually disguised as multipurpose in car phone chargers, they come with various adaptors.

Good luck with the project.

best regards, Richard.
I'm glad we moved the boat from the canals to the Broads, No locks.

I've read mixed reviews about these adapters that have Ethernet cable in and the abability to plug USB out the otherside. It seems some can't work with webcams and you get a bad image or just low resolution or computer will not 'see' the device. So to avoid worry and keep things easy I've stuck with USB.

I know that limits how long things can be but really as long as have enough to go from laptop to the outside is all that matters.

This could be done better but I'm going with 'off the shelf cheap' from the webcam to plug and go simplicity of USB right down to the free software to switch camera views but add overlays and graphics should I wish.

Weather proofing. Big ask. Not done much. Think easy option many online have done is getting cheap torches and using the gutted body as a water tight housing. Think that may be for later in year time and money permitting. No good having a great rig that works inall weathers but b****y thing has no image etc so this is more 'will it work' prototyping.

I'm using Three for the mobile network. In my experience other than Horning and Womack very good reception. Often getting HSDPA (High Speed Data Packet Access) which is 'Broadband' speeds but if not the slower 3G speed would do. Just image quality would suffer.

I'll also be keeping tabs on data use. I can control quaily of audio and frame rate and video quality too in order to help bandwidth. What will be best medium between quality and data use yet to see.

There will be adverts Frown   Full screen up to 30 seconds long and pop ups at bottom of screen. And indontbget a penny - Thats the way on all streaming services these days. I am not paying £100 for a few advert free viewing hours. Their enterprise package is almost £1,000 a month for a few hundred viewer hours advert free!

So that's the background. If all goes to plan you will see and hear everything fine. If it rains - hmm lets just see how wok sandwich bags work at all weather housings lol.

Steve
How about heat shrink sleeving to waterproof the connections
you could put a piece of tubing over the plugs then shrink sleeve the ends

One day, my ship will come in. And with my luck, I'll be waiting at the airport!
