Hi all.  I am new to this forum so not sure this is the right place for this topic so apologies.
I booked a break with my family on the broads 35 years after last visiting as a child and everyone was excited to be returning.  We would have been leaving tomorrow and I had contacted the boatyard to make final arrangements for cabins, dinghy hire, fuel etc. unfortunately I was contacted by the booking agent (cannot be named for legal reasons, large and very well known)earlier this week to be told the boat in question had been sold. I have discovered the boatyard involved had communicated this in writing but it was not dealt with by the agent. They could not find an alternative to compare to first holiday, they then let me down on two further accommodations because they failed to check availability with the appropriate boatyards. What is even more disappointing is the boat in question was still being advertised on their website after it was withdrawn. I'm sorry if this sounds a bit vague there are specific details I cannot go into as I am about to serve a legal claim against the booking agent for recovery of my costs.
I have spent all week ringing up to 20 boatyards, details of which I got from this forum enabling me to find boatyards hiring on the right day. There were several boatyards whose staff were really helpful when they heard my dilemma, particularly Herbert Woods staff who went out of their way to help me.
I shall be booking independently with them in the future.

Hi Katesmum.  Sorry to hear about the problems you've had - shocking!!  We booked direct with Richardsons and have had two great holidays plus they have a 'Loyalty Scheme'!! Ricco's staff have always been great with us.
Don't think I'd go through a booking agent especially after hearing about your problem.
Hope you get it sorted out and manage to have a good holiday.

All the best.

Hi katesmum and welcome to the site,

I hope your poor experience doesn't spoil your holiday, the yards are normally very helpful and friendly, just a shame that the agents aren't up to the same standard.

Hi Katesmum,we have only booked with the major agents on
two occasions, we normally deal direct with the boatyard
and this year Richardsons have pulled out the stops so
we can join the cruise in company, hope your time back
was as good as mine after been away for so long.

It is unusual for a yard to sell a boat mid-season and not provide a replacement themselves as there are penalties that can be imposed as part of their contract unless the agents had agreed to the sale or withdrawal of the vessel.

Thank you for all your comments.
I can thoroughly recommend Herbert Woods who pulled out all the stops to salvage a few days holiday from this mess. I was able to show my daughter the same things that I fell in love with on my last visit all those years ago. It may have been only for a few short days but with the added bonus of gorgeous weather, we expect to return for a full week in the Summer to do the bits we missed and will definitely go independently.
I'm off to prepare a case for recovery of costs against the company it would be unprofessional to name, Ho, Ho, Ho!

I hope H /W make up for your dissappointment.I remember back in the late 60s arriving at the boatyard with my parents and waiting all day for the boat to show up as promised by the owner of the yard only to drive home to kent again that night, the owner kept insisting the craft was just an hour away even though we found out later it was on someone elses slipway as it had sunk the week before.

Hi Katesmum,

Sounds like you've had a right carry on with the booking agent...hopefully the outcome of that will be to your satisfaction. But on a brighter note you've booked with what we think to be a fantastic boatyard. We have nothing but praise for Herbert Woods, from the reception staff through to the guys in the boatyard, everybody is so pleasent and helpful. Having had four holidays afloat with them now and have just returned from a weeks break in late May on their all new boat Supreme Light (amazing boat) we would'nt book with anybody else and always book direct with them. I guess that's why we've booked another weekend afloat with them in late August. All in all it's five star service from Herbert Woods for us.

Have a great holiday.  Smile

We always try to book direct with the boatyards over the years as you tend to get a better deal and the boatyards get a better deal i would think.

Next year we are going to book dorect with Summercraft or Royalls and cut out the middle man, if the agent is who i think it is they seem now to have more add on costs than a budget airline Smile
