One of the most common causes of injury to swans is discarded fish hooks. Swans forage on river beds for their food so a hook and line can easily be swallowed. Well over 3,000 swans (National Figures) and thousands more waterbirds are currently treated every year. Real nature lovers these angler’s

To: Fred Thanks for your concern I had slept, it’s just that I’m an early riser and while having breakfast I thought I’d air my views. Yes I do realise there’s millions of intellectually challenged people about.

Derek, As someone totally un-interested in fishing myself I can understand some of your points. I have to say that I think we cannot ignore the fact whether we'd like to or not, that this sport does put a hell of a lot of money to the broads each year, and that a lot of people hiring craft on the Broads do so for this reason. Fisherman can be a pain, sometimes are taking up a potential mooring spot - but I've never struggled to find a mooring on the Broads with because this is an unbearable problem. Furthermore, whilst it would (on one hand!) be great if we could ban everything we don't agree with, or everything that falls outside of the morals or world we each live in, unfortunately the country is made up of a wide range of people all interested and entertained by different things, and this is the world we have to live in, we have no choice, and personally I like the differences, that everyone doesn't like the same and don't mind sharing my world with people with different interests to myself that sometimes cross over! So I if you don't like it don't do it, but trying to stop others or banning it when it's one of the most popular sports in the country is, to be quite honest, a waste of time and energy, and looking to the bigger and broader picture if fishing was banned your Broadland experience would suffer as a result, yes you wouldn't have the boats moored with people fishing off (why that should be a problem I don't know), but youd also have less hirecraft, and there would be less revenue coming into the area and authorities, so you'd still be worse off.

Hi DERICK roya here. You may hate fishing that's fine, and I do agree that sometimes fishermen can be a pain in the bum,but PLEASE note sarcasm never won a battle. I love boating and rivers and wildlife. I support our local zoo BANHAM and and I am helping with a local project to re-introduce sparrows into gardens. Now I also like fishing. I can read and write, and have a MECH E degree in ENGINEERING, so I am not yet brain dead. I have over the years kept up with progress on fishing, ie no barbed hooks no keepnets, and bio degradable line. In the future fishing like hunting may be banned; no doubt horse racing, dog racing and little old ladies will not be allowed to have a buddgie in their rooms. You may find it interesting to note the worst disaster up here at the present time was caused by some ANIMAL LOVERS setting MINK free to terrorise the poor old OTTERS AND VOLES. So if you want to stop fishing that is your right but please use a modicum of decorum. As a final point, here in Norfolk, I wonder what we are going to do with the numbers of people who are employed on the hunting side of things. I myself am not in favour of hunting, but as long as the non-hunting lobby are prepared to pay more in taxes, national insurance, council tax, etc to pay the dole money of the people thrown out of work, that's also fine. Because I believe at the moment that will effect over 2,000 jobs in our county alone. And I would point out, Derek, at the moment they are legal jobs. The only people committing criminal acts are the anti-hunt/fishing (in the future) demonstrators. I bet half of them are on benefits. Also Derek, I hope that you're a vegetarian because the cruelty going on in our poultry/meat industries far outweighs our pastime. Not forgetting the trawlers out at sea catching dolphins etc, which rather outweighs a few fishermen bringing much needed money into Norfolk. I see you are a musician, what instrument do you play (I hope it's not a harp). roya

Nice rant... "and another thing...." I often wonder about the anglers... they seem such a miserable bunch, hunched up over their rods, never smiling, seldom responding to a "good morning." The only place that they bother me is at Ranworth Staithe, where they hog the place, making it hard for everyone else to get in for a trip to the shop or pub. I'd be quite happy to see a mooring charge there.

I have usually found it is the people who are intellectually challenged themselves who have to resort to sarcasm and abuse.

Hi …. All Come on guy’s why do you men take this fishing lark so seriously………. I must say I don’t agree with fishing after all I am a nurse and care about all life. There are some points I agree with, like being unable to moor because they spread them selves along the moorings……… But surely you can all see you’re being wound up.
