Welcome to all the new, relatively new and older members of the NBF hands alike.

For the new members on this FREE site, welcome to the free service we all enjoy so much.
Allow me to enlighten some of the more recent members how this site operates. Have a read through older threads if you like, it makes an interesting read as it would do where the touchy subject of money and donations is discussed.

Richard runs this site out of his own pocket month in and month out year in year out. It was his idea, it is his baby, his hobby and he kindly allows no, that’s wrong, he actively enjoys our company and participation in his hobby, good for him and I think he is a great bloke for coming up with the idea/ethos of the NBF.

No one has mentioned ‘Tin Rattling for a while now. Well it needs mentioning as yet again Richard is in the red with regards to the site running costs and we collectively can help him out here.

There are 3 x costs that have to be paid for each year to keep the NBF going these are:- 1) ISP,  2) Telco, 3) Electric.  These three add up to a sizeable amount without giving exact figures the total in nearer £2k than it is £1k.  On top of this is costs to replace owt that breaks or needs upgrading, nor does it include the loss of room space to house it all!

It is never easy asking for donations, Richard hardly ever does, he wants to keep this site a free resource for all and sundry to benefit from and we do so some more than others.

The NBF is run at a loss, it was never designed to keep Richards Broom 50 in diesel and therefore won’t even support his boat in his bath (Richard doesn’t currently enjoy being a boat owner in his own right btw and probably never will whilst keeping this site going for the members)

Sometimes the site slows down, sometimes it is damned annoying but 99% of the time it is a joy to participate in and long may it continue please.

The Mods and the screwdriver keeper (That is G.C btw) all give their time freely to keep things ticking over as best they can, sometimes they don’t get it right, again imho 99% of the time they most certainly do. If you will allow me such exuberance though I would humbly suggest collectively they do a far better job at it than most of us ever could.

Advertising does bring in some revenue, so does the sale of NBF stuff in the shop, this is one area that not so long ago was failing imho. The boss now has got his finger out and stock now is readily available although I do feel that he should ask a few members to make some stock available over a counter one outlet North and one South would do it, say Loddon chandlery and LBBY?

Out of nearly 6000+ members (Not all active admittedly) ask yourself can we come up with ideas between ourselves to assist?

I do try and do my bit, at risk of being lambasted for trumpet blowing - I have a monthly subscription to site funds. Next month I’m going to up this to £15 per month via standing order. I do the odd one-off donations now and again. I’ve taken members out onboard ‘B.A’ via a raffle system and will no doubt do so again

So seeing as Richard is too humble to ask for help (And NO he has not pm’d, e-mailed or rang me asking me to assist) I’m asking you for your help, and it is only an ask, just a little one and no obligation either (I’m not very good at this sort of thing am I?) To keep the site going to improve its access and speed cost money, what doesn’t?

Could you please find it in yourself to make a donation to site funds?

There I’ve said it now, Pheweeeeeee, red face.

A one off donation would be course gratefully received, more the merrier, but what would really help him out is a regular monthly subscription then he knows how much he has to play with each month. It doesn’t have to be much either. Ask yourselves what price a daily newspaper or a weekly/monthly magazine, the NBF can easily match the leisure time offered by those mediums and it’s free.

Other ways we can assist is if you make a sale of items through the site, then a small donation from the sale of said item, if you are running a business and gaining revenue from free site advertising then it would also be appropriate to assist now and again methinks.

I for one have gained such a HUGE amount of help through the NBF during the restoration of Broad Ambition which saved us no end of time and money and will be forever grateful. I have also met and made many new friends, and had some great times out on the water all courtesy of the NBF and will continue to do so no doubt. The site gives me a free hobby when not afloat and provides me with my ‘Broads Fix’ with like minded soles, all of which I cannot put a price on and would happily pay for.

If you feel you would like to say thank you and make a contribution to site funds, then please PM either the Boss Richard or G.C, or myself, I can forward cheques. Then there is the facilities at the bottom of the page in red click on them for one off or monthly donations. Those that want to do the monthly standing order thing then I have the site account/sort codes etc send me a pm.

One last point there is no obligation and I hope I have not pressurised anyone into helping out. Richards’s ethos is for this site to remain a free resource

Thanking you in advance

Griff

Just a thought...
If the site has 6000 members, some not active of course,
If half of those members donated say £1 this would surely
raise a decent amount of funds, with a little spare for
replacing equipment etc when needed.
Once we are up and running properly during the summer we
plan to make a donation anyway, but a little from
everyone now would not be too much to ask surely...

I think you're being a bit harsh there, Lelly.

Griff's excellent and thoughtful post was made this morning and many people are at work all day and have little or no opportunity to access the site (I'm on a break at the moment) let alone formulate an informed response.

Moreover, we have many wonderful people who donate to the site but who don't feel the need to shout it from the rooftops that they do. They prefer to support us quietly. We are eternally grateful to anyone who takes the time to donate whether that donation is large or small. As a very annoying supermarket would say "every little helps".

Hi Griff, yes agree with you wholeheartedly, you can't run a website at a loss even if you call it a hobby, I admire the fact that you can give a set amount per month, which as you say helps Richard with a yearly budget, unfortunately when I look at my bank statements each month one page is direct debits, I don't wish to continue on the second page, but I have in the past made a donation for a DVD, bought of course the forum flag, and recently made a small one-off donation which I intend to do from time to time as finances allow as I really couldn't do without this forum.

These are my thoughts on the subject and look forward to any others. Ted

All the best Ted.

After a similar prompt a few months ago I set up a monthly standing order to The Forum. The actual form can be printed if you click in the "make a donation" box at the bottom of the page and then go to Standing Order.
Just think, if 10 new members each gave £5 per month ,the Forum funds would increase by £600 per annum .If 30 members each donated £5 per month this would bring in £1800 per annum.....Simmple eh!

Yes it's that simple and that would cover the running costs alone.

Thanks so much to those that do already contribute and to those new contribu'es (Doubt I've pronounced that correctly let alone the sllepnig)

Hi what you've done is right to shout about it, I used to run a site and the members stopped sending and in the end I was paying so can it in the end.
Just sent a payment across.
How about putting a link next to the ad for forum goodies at the top left?
