Does anyone recall hiring a boat from BB Cruisers between 1968 and
1990? I am trying to trace the whereabouts of the couple that ran the
company - Jim and Wendy Berkeley or their descendants - to find out
more about the Broom Commander "Perrapin" I have just purchased. She
was commissioned by them and was their fleet flagship. I believe they
lived in Welwyn Garden City at the time.

Best Wishes - Peter

If you do a search on the excellent database at http://www.horning.org.uk/boats.php, you'll find some info and a couple of photos of Perrapin. A very beautiful boat - congratulations on acquiring her!

Sorry don't know anything about Bb cruisers but congratulations on a lovely boat, I do love those commanders, and Navigators and Captains and Admirals, did you notice I like Brooms, at least the wood ones. Smile

What a cracking boat, well done on catching her.

I too just love the Broom woodies to bits

Hello Peter

You could try asking on the local forum here:
http://www.shapps.com/forum/

Are you saying they lived in WGC while they ran the boatyard as thats quite a commute!!

Yes, according to a newspaper cutting from 1968 which is kept in a frame
on board Perrapin, the Berkeleys were from Welwyn GC. After spending
several enjoyable holidays on the Broads in the 1960's, their enthusiasm
lead them  to found BB Cruisers in 1968 and to commission Perrapin from
Brooms the same year. BB Cruisers was run from Riverside Estate Brundall
almost next door to Brooms themselves.

Thanks for all other posts. Perrapin is afloat again after a hull re caulk
and paint. We were indeed very fortunate in acquiring her and are looking
forward to introducing her to waters new.

Best Wishes - Peter

Hi Peter

Perrapin is a beautiful boat ... congratulations!

I'm not sure whether you have seen, or have this, but here is the original brochure entry for her .... taken from Bradbeers 1968 edition.

By "waters new", I presume that she will no longer be based on the Broads?

Interesting there are two Berkeleys one living in Welwyn Garden City and one north of Ware in the BT online directory enquiries but none noted for Norwich.

May be that is a route to follow.  Bit of a long shot but nothing in Norwich but at least one in WGC is intesting.  Not posting actual details for obvious reason but here is the link

This reply is well out of date to the question but I've only found the site. We had a great holiday aboard Perrapin. It was and I hope still is a beautiful boat. So easy to handle. We travelled from North Yorkshire and upon our arrival my car boot would not lock. On return to the B & B cruisers, the owner of the yard who as stated I think we're Jim and Wendy Berkeley were at the yard. Whilst away, he had repaired my boot for me. On chatting to him, he told me that he had sold his garage business in Harrogate North Yorkshire to take on B & B cruisers. Thought it just might help in tracing him. Might still have family in North Yorkshire.
