Hi All,

The bridge pilot service is now operated by Norfolk Broads Direct and the mobile number already given is indeed correct.

However, this pilot service is only vailable now to hire boats and is no longer offered to private boat owners.

Mmmmm. It seems to me that at this time of the year they would be glad of the extra cash from private boats. £20 a time would make about £100 an hour at suitable times, assuming 1 boat every 10mins and a full booking at low water times!
I will check up on this next week when we are down again as this will mean no upriver journeys for us! Once a pilot has taken our boat through once so that I can see the clearance for myself, I will then do it, but NOT before(Read coward). I am not doubting you Darren, but that seems to be a step backwards by someone in charge again! Frown

You only get one body, please it as often as you can! I do....
Morgage free and afloat at last too!

We don't use the pilot to take us through the bridge, but keep the number handy so we can ring and check water levels if necessary.  Only one or twice a year are we in the postition of needing this info, usually when out on a main holiday and therefore with limited access to up to date info.

Just to make sure, is that mobile number for Wroxham or Potter Heigham, or both?

The two pilot services operate completely independently of one another.  The mobile number is for wroxham only.

Hi all,

Just spoken to NBD and they only provide their pilot service to hire yards that have made arrangements in advance and not I'm afraid to private boat owners.

The reason I believe is that (like Buffalo Bill) once you have used them once and worked out what clearances you need you will not use them again.

Not sure if BuffaloBill is on private or hire boat. But its compulsory for hirers isn't it? Or is that just Potter?

Sorry, not up to date with this now, but worth clarifying for those looking in.

Not all Hireyards HAVE to use the pilot at Wroxham. Some of those based in Wroxham will pilot their own boats and some will allow you to pilot your own boat through.

There is a sign at the pilot moorings which states what companies use the pilot. I have seen a picture of this in another thread if somebody cares to look.

So what happens if boat has a scrape while the pilot is in charge of the boat? I assume such things never happen?

Only hirers would hit a bridge by mistake ....
