thank you for the explanation - we had all kinds of explanations between us - including someone had taped it off because they had baited it up ready for fishing and did not someone else taking their spot.  Nothing like it in the end.

your mystery duck is a female (or possibly eclipse) pochard (Aythina ferina) - quite common on the Broads

Regarding the taped-off trees.

When we came back to Stalham on Saturday lunch (26th) there was a workboat and ranger boat moored there.  The guys had a large pump rigged and the guys were in discussion.  Any smoke had already dispersed.

The pump will be the give away!!!!

Someone may have had a BBQ - the peat is so dry that fires are quickly burning down into the peat and they are hard to put out.

Equally there may have been some felling of brush being burnt - this could also have burnt down and that can smoulder for hours and hours.
