Interesting article. Would be great on the rivers as speeders are a perennial pain in the ass! Mad

Please forgive me for getting all serious and 'soap-boxy, as regards the highways, I can't help thinking that the money would have been better spent on real police work and trying to solve real crime instead of funding ridiculous schemes like this...

nothing new with these, they have been in use on the A46 between Leicester and Newarke, the A14 thru Leicestershire and Northamptonshire and on the ring roads around Nottingham for some years. The technology is proven, I don't understand why such funding for so called trials is needed?

If we are going to have speed cameras these are much better than spot cameras which simply cause those intent on speeding to slam their brakes on 50 yards before the camera, and floor the accelerator 50 yards after it.

Paul

Just what I was thinking Paul.. I remember first seeing these (and they weren't new then) on the M6 Thelwall Viaduct roadworks back in 2002.

Maybe if there was one at Acle it would have caught the BA launch going down river at approx 1015-1030 doing around 9 or 10 mph.

The wash wasnt great but the speed was.

Although speeders need to be stopped what about all the uninsured, untaxed, un registered, un MOTed cars, drunk and un licenced drivers?  I know there is the odd ANPR police car around but I would rather the extra money was spent on detecting the above than more speed cameras.

I think the EDP have got some of their facts wrong. The technology that describe is not new. What is new is the use of wireless technology to link cameras in a grid, making it possible to cover all possible routes in an urban environment.

My sincere hope is that this technology will replace the awful speed bumps, that damage vehicles, cause noise pollution and hugely increase CO2 emissions. Not to mention the problems of going over them with a back injury (as my Dad will testify having been over some in the back of an ambulance with a fractured pelvis).

As a solution for urban and suburban speeding, where hte risk to pedestrians cyclists etc is much higher, this seems good to me.
