quote:"...... ice is 10 times the volume of normal water ......."
ice has roughly 10% greater volume than sea water, not ten times the volume (hence 10% of an iceberg floats).
The issue with wilkins was that it "hung" above the water. 90% of it is now submerged. Still it won't make any difference to sea levels on it's own, it will simply drift south over many years, break up and melt.
The real issue is that this wasn't expected to happen for another 20 years or so at least suggesting that Antartica is well ahead of temperature rise predictions.
Ther is enough water locked above sea level in the antartic ice to raise gloabal sea level many meters
not quite ten times .... if that were the case your ice cubes would be ten times bigger when you took them out of the freezer than when you put them in.
Now if that theory could work with the G&T!
Interestingly water is the only substance known to man which is less dense when solidified than when liquid, hence it freezes from the top. Everything else is more dense and solidifies from the bottom.
